In preparation for writing THE FLOOR OF HEAVEN, Howard Blum studied small mountains of material: repros of contemporary newspapers, original correspondence, reminiscences, previously published books, also the substantial Yukon holdings of Yale's Beinecke Rare Book archives. Often there were conflicting stories to compare (six alone for an important showdown). Blum decided which of his sources was most likely true and avoided muddling his narrative with digressive recaps of differing accounts.Although heavily based in history, the vivid adventures of Pinkerton agent Charlie Siringo, flim-flam man Jeff 'Soapy' Smith and Yukon motherlode discoverer George Carmack make for what is primarliy a highly readable novel. As Blum himself explains, "...I wanted to tell a fast-paced story and to make my characters come alive in the reader's mind. I wanted to share what they were thinking, and feeling, with, I concede, a novelist's immediacy.....And again, I wanted it all to be true."He has succeeded most admirably. I loved reading this book and highly recommend it to all!
Very good read. I did like the audio book better. If you are interested in Alaska history especially associated with gold mining and the characters who were involved in early prospecting, this is the book for you.
Fun read..like having someone spin a great yarn around the campfire..
