As one of the historians interviewed in the book (the section on JFK), I have to admit that I am not an entirely objective reviewer. However, I think that the author has done a remarkable job of asking thoughtful, probing and tough questions. I learned a lot from several of the interviews and found myself wondering if this book could be especially useful for introducing undergraduates to the drama and complexity of US history.
As one of the writers fortunate enough to be featured in this volume, I was impressed and gratified by Boston's endless curiosity for the historical themes that define who we are as a nation today, and his great respect for historians, writers, readers and audiences. As a reader, I've spent hours with this book already and expect to spend many more in the weeks to come. Much of its substance has to do with the author's skills as an interviewer. Talmage Boston has an innate gift for asking just the right question, at just the right time, to elicit a new and fascinating perspective. It's like sitting down in a comfortable chair before a fire and having an extended conversation you hope will never end. Bravo.
A fascinating read, where you will learn something new every chapter! Boston "cross-examines" our top presidential biographers and insiders, and he isn't afraid to ask the hard-hitting questions. It is truly a page turner with a unique format that will allow you to hop around and read about the former US presidents in whatever order you prefer. Boston's conclusive "Ten Commandments of Great Presidential Leadership" is particularly insightful and thought-provoking, especially during our current presidential election.
