Bilbury Grange is the second in Vernon Coleman's series of Bilbury books. The place is the English county of Devon. The time is the 1970s. A young doctor, just married and in a new home (a vast and rambling country house in desperate need of repairs and renovation), has taken over a small village practice when suddenly the authorities decide that the village isn't big enough to have its own doctor. The villagers decide otherwise. Bilbury is the village everyone dreams of living in. It's the village where people speak to strangers and where doors are left unlocked. Bilbury Grange is the story of village life in the 1970s and it centres on the young doctor and his lovely wife. But its also about the people who live there and it is a story of great happiness and joy, some tragedy and many dramas.`For sheer relaxing pleasure here's another witty tale from the doctor whose prolific writings are so well known.' BBC Bookshelf`A wonderful book for relaxing and unwinding. Makes you want to up roots and move to the rural heartland.' Lincolnshire Echo`A cornucopia of colourful characters help to weave a rich tapestry of village life subtly tempered with gentle humour...the mixture of rural beauty, human nature and the odd whisper of nostalgia combine to make this book a real delight.' Western Gazette`The tales he tells are truly uplifting and thought provoking. They are a breath of fresh air in a troubled world and are also very amusing.' Peoples Friend`I have just finished reading Bilbury Grange. I found the book to be brilliant. I felt as though I was part of the community.' After falling in love with Bilbury Grange, The Young Country Doctor Book 1, I was a little wary the second and subsequent books will be less enthralling, shallow follow-up of a first successful story- as it happens so often in series. I needn't have worried, I read book 2 twice as fast and couldn't wait to order all available books in the series (which were not available yet on Kindle at the time I bought #1).And because i agree with Vernon Coleman on many of his activists views (warning us about the danger of medical practice, pharmaceutical empires, animal cruelty, etc.) I have also decided to buy 12 more medical books from him. After all, health is the only real wealth we really own, isn't it?Sorry, can't stay too long, must start on Book #3 tonight. A good book is like a best friend, so rare indeed...

A good clean read. Populated with loveable eccentric people. Makes you see and feel every scene from the village to the stable at Bilbury Grange. The whole series is arguably one of the best I have ever read. Out of the 7 books in the series I have read 5 and eagerly look forward to the next. The characters are developed beautifully. The doctors' love for his village and his neighbors as well as his patients through out the series is the main story-line. Always there is an undercurrent of his humanity and desire to maintain the village in the feeling of a by-gone era. It's almost impossible to determine the year he is writing about but there is inevitable a small clue that kind of gets you in the right decade. However, it could be any year, any holiday, any time. He writes with love and compassion for animals and people alike. Several times I noticed tears and a lump in my throat.

Many authors attempt to capture the folksy, humorous style of James HERRIOT but few succeed. Vernon Coleman has a similar but unique style of his own. He manages to find and convey just how special the everyday moments of life can be-- from watching a pair of wild birds raise their new family in our barn/garage to having tea with an old friend. The simple pleasures of life are shared with a newlywed couple who buy a derelict home and restore it into a home. The community faces the threat of redevelopment and the possible loss of their intimate community by joining forces and making difficult decisions that may not be monetarily rewarding but which are spiritually rewarding. As soon as I

Like Book 1, Book 2 also has keen observations on human nature and is chock full of memorable people and events. Coleman, who still practices medicine, crafted the Bilbury books based on his experiences as a young physician in rural England. He views people, both their shortcomings and their strengths with a philosophical eye and weaves tales that are ultimately heartwarming and uplifting.I was gratified to find this book built on the first, even better in some ways. I'm reading the series to my mother, who has dementia. In Book 2 the young doctor begins to lay the foundation for his life, and develop values. How he and his wife's values coalesce is illustrated by events, what happens to them. Dr. Coleman shows, rather than tells, and movingly so. Details of setting up house, marital bliss, professional and lifestyle choices, all are interwoven casually, naturally yet powerfully. This is somewhat lighter fare than the first book, in that good fortune, serendipity, coincidences and positive outcomes abound and sometime strain credulity, but we enjoyed it anyway. This book focuses more on local politics, ethical issues in medicine, and lifestyle choices rather than individual patients. With each chapter, my mom clamored for the next, we both loved it. Highly recommended! On to Book 3...

I'm finding that Vernon Coleman is an excellent writer. I enjoy reading stories of times past from the English countryside. The times were simpler and make me nostalgic for the past. Thanks Mr. Coleman!

A charming and light read. I would like to live in Bilbury. I think I could probably live in Doctor Brownlow's mansion for a long time without being discovered.I think the first book was more interesting and had more happening. Maybe it's just me, but I think these books seem awfully short. That maybe at one time this series was either one very long book or a couple of moderately long books. This is a good book to read when you need something quick and cheerful to read.

I do enjoy reading Vernon Coleman's work. So far, I have found it all tasteful and well written. Editing is great, and I have had no problems trying to figure out what the author intended to say. Steamy situations and coarse language are nonexistent. I will be looking for more from this author.

Bilbury Grange is Vernon Coleman’s second book in the Bilbury Chronicles. At the end of book one our young physician has just gotten married to Patsy. They bought a vast rambling country home in need of repairs or renovation, following the example set by Dr. Brownlow when he came to Bilbury many years ago. He has taken over Dr. Brownlow practice as he is retiring. After spending all his money and going into debt, the National health authorities decided the village isn’t big enough to have its own doctor. The people in the village decide otherwise and so we go into an exciting story. I like the two old ladies with their garden and cats. They give the doctor two cats. I wonder why the author has not given our young doctor a name. In this issue we have the doctor writing a newspaper column about a drug company testing a new drug on people without telling them and paying physicians to give it to their patients. This leads us to a key item coming up in the next issue.I met the villagers in book one so I feel as if I have just dropped by for a cup a tea and to catch up on the latest gossip. The book is well written, the characters are developed beautifully. The twists and turns of the plot kept my attention. The author reveals the characters shortcomings and their strengths with a philosophic eye. Sort of reminds me of Alexander McCall Smith’s stories. I find the book very heartwarming and uplifting. I cannot wait to read the next book. I got this book on my Kindle unlimited selections. I read this e-book on my Kindle app for my iPad.
