Let me begin by saying I'm a huge fan of E.L. Todd I love her books. This book Monday is the start of an awesome series. All I can say is she had to put a lot of time an feel a lot of emotions to write this story. It is phenomenal, it's very emotional . You will want to cry, scream, say a lot of what the hell and so much more. It's gripping and devastating, it's love at the highest mountain top, it's pain as low as you can get...think the bottom of the sea. I loved this book...I will admit I did cry...but in all you will love it.Frankie works at The Grind a coffee shop where she meets Hawke, not knowing he is her brother's best friend. They go out an Hawke thinks she is like all the other women he has gone out with, a one night stand. But he realizes she is different. They fall for each other in a very big way. They are soul mates they know they belong together.Hawke has a hard time dealing with problems from home. He was abused by his dad now his mom is taking the beatings. He tried to get het out but she stays. Hawke feels like he is just like his father, he is afraid he will be just like him , hurting the one he loves.Hawke decides to go out with Frankie's brother and sees some guy kissing Frankie, he literally goes berserk. He beats the guy up and Frankie tries to get him to stop but he throws her across the room. He realizes what's he done, he just looks at her and walks out, he can't handle what he did. In the back of his mind he's his dad.Frankie tries to get in touch with him but no response . She goes to his home an sees moving trucks , she walks in and sees place is empty. She can't believe he is leaving without telling her or talking to her. She can't take it, she falls to floor at his feet, he just looks at her an walks away.
You guys know by now that I really don’t hold back in my reviews. I always try to keep any criticism constructive and I never want to tear someone apart. So I agreed to read this book and I was just not feeling it. I don’t mean the book itself. I was just feeling lazy and tired and all kinds of blah. But I made a commitment and I will honor that. And I am so happy I did.Just to be up front, Hawke is friends with Axel, who is Frankie’s brother. So I never like those stories. Like, they just never make sense to me. I hate the whole “hide the relationship from the older brother” thing. This book is also the first in a series and I don’t always loves series. Basically my point in here is there is so much about this book that I should have really hated. And yet…I loved it.E.L.Todd managed to make me love a book that had several themes in it that I normally avoid. That is NOT an easy feat. But she did it. One aspect I truly admired how was how she handled the entire situation of Axel and Hawke being friends and Axel not wanting Hawke to date Frankie. Mild spoiler here: Hawke just has a man to man conversation with Axel about it. I cannot put into words how much I loved that. In other books with that “forbidden relationship” theme, I always wish the characters would just grow up and address the real issue and they never do and it becomes a mess. So the fact that Hawke stepped up to the plate for Frankie was just extremely admirable to me.Another facet that I was swept up in was that both Frankie and Hawke have issues. They talk about them but yet, they don’t. Some readers might find that frustrating but I felt it made sense for Frankie and Hawke.
So I tried really hard to like this book. However, it was hopeless. It felt like the writings of a very immature author, though I read somewhere she has written over 100 books. But when Hawke, the main guy, refers to Francesca, the main girls body as 'boobalicious', I knew there was no hope for me giving this book a good review. There are instances like that throughout the book. Not exactly how mature people in their 20's who have investment jobs or are about to graduate college and open their own business would speak. More like teens who haven't actually had any sexual experience and therefore refer to a woman's body with childish slang. Also, even in a joking way, I still find it annoying that he refers to her as a fat ass throughout the book. Not to mention that the story got quite ridiculous towards the end. Hawke makes Francesca promise if he ever hurts her she will kill him- you see he has an abusive father and a traumatizing childhood- and when he accidentally knocks her backwards during a fight, he shows up like 2 weeks later with a knife and demands she keep her promise....now I'm a lover of books with a broken soul that the right person comes along and helps piece back together. But does that sound at all healthy or like something you would casually respond to with an eye roll and a ' your aren't your father...I love you...you deserve me...' Blah blah blah. No. It doesn't. And this book is littered with empty flattery...'your body is perfect...you are perfect...you fixed me...' Etc etc. There are millions of ways to put the 26 letters of our alphabet together to create your own way to describe emotions or experiences. I am dissapointed that this author took the stereotypical ones that are already greatly overused and produced your typical, predictable, romance novel.
