In the style of her Phoenix Pack series, Suzanne Wright has gifted us with Burn. The series starts with an introduction to the Las Vegas lair of demons and their Prime, Knox, who built and runs the Underground, which is kind of a demon version of the traditional Las Vegas. Harper, our shero, lives in Vegas, but doesn't belong to Knox's lair. Rather, her family of imps has their own lair, run by Harper's grandmother. The world building is fabulous, mixing the familiar with the fantastic. In this world, in place of fated mates, we have "anchors", who keep the demons from going rogue. The anchor acts as a kind of psychic shield, where each partner benefits from the connection. Anchors are *not* necessarily love interests, though the anchors develop close relationships. On to the rest - KNOX and HARPER!!! Oh My Gawd - this is the shhh...ugar cookie stuff that keeps romance lovers coming back for more.Knox is the Biggest Bad of all the Big Bads - and he and his demon are bored. His demon tends to become fixated on a woman - for a short time -then loses interest. Knox is extremely upfront about this with Harper. She doesn't exactly jump at the offer, knowing that after their sexual relationship ends, they will still be in each other's lives due to the anchor bond. Knox only knows that he and his demon are endlessly (for now) fascinated with Harper. Harper does not ever seem to react in a predictable way, keeping them (Knox and his demon) enchanted and entertained. Harper is sassy, smart, strong, and most importantly, not afraid of Knox, et al.Harper, to repeat, is sassy, smart and strong. She also has serious abandonment issues, due to her not horrible, but not traditional, upbringing.
What a great start to a series. It's not often that you get to read a PNR where both the h and the H are both demons. I really love the fact that the h, while she can be quite the kick-axx doesn't feel the need to flaunt it, only does so when needed such as when she stands up for her cousin or she needs to get herself out of a bad situation. In other words, this is a smart heroine who, while not taking guff from anyone, doesn't needlessly antagonize anyone but is never a doormat. She had lousy parents, but she doesn't feel sorry for herself and sees some of the good that came in her life from a nomadic upbringing. Best of all she's very independent but not to the point of TSTL. For this, I give a huge thank you to the author. So many times I groan in romances where the heroine is a wannabe or delusional warrior and she does causes more trouble for everyone. Not this heroine - she knows when to stay by the sidelines or when to fight with all she's got.I really loved how despite this being PNR, it was not instal-love for these two. They did get to know each other and realize how much they meant to one another. The romance was believable because they were both so honest with each - no communication problems. Again, another big thank you to the author for writing a "big misunderstanding" event between the two of them. As a romance book addict, I'm so tired of seeing people simply not talking to each other, particularly if their love is so strong for each other - it makes me really wonder about their long term viability.Lastly, the world building was interesting. I really appreciate how the author gives the details of the demon world - through events, actions, conversations, internal thoughts.
