I encountered this book more than 20 years ago when I had already been doing/teaching Italic for 20+ years. It expressed in print what my original teachers had hoped to do -- teach students italic not just for artistic expression, but as a replacement for 'ordinary' handwriting. That was at Kent School in Connecticut where they had found after a trimester's worth of italic study, almost all student handwriting improved dramatically. Unfortunately, unless one took Art History as a senior (where one had to take notes and write all exams in italic), there was no follow-up. And the initial course focused more on formal Italic with only a couple of lessons on writing an italic script at speed. So, though I continued studying. doing and later teaching calligraphy as "art" I didn't think of it as a replacement for my ordinary -- if quite legible -- handwriting. Then Mr. Eager entered my life and what a revelation! I took myself through the book as if I was new to Italic, zealously practiced speed drills and after a time I made myself write everything in Italic. I found that both my "artistic" script and ordinary handwriting were tremendously improved. When I started a new round of teaching, this book was at the core of my curriculum. Later -- and especially in my classes for children -- I added in Inga Dubay and Barbara Getty's excellent series of books -- with terrific results. Then, after several years away from teaching I was appalled to find Eager's book-- as well as the Dubay/Getty series -- to be out of print and unobtainable. I was horrified. A had a semi-major stroke two years ago and felt for a time that I had lost too much control for calligraphy and without this book, didn't have the heart to start again. But will wonders never cease...
