I've always wanted to learn how to play the piano. This book not only teaches basic notes and scales but technique as well. It has nice diagrams and pictures to make learning much easier. It is very simple and has a nice step by step approach to teaching. I like that it has YouTube videos to accompany the book. It's great for the visual learner!
Not only does this book teach you technique and form, but also helps get that muscle memory moving by taking you deep into the pianist's mind. An example, shared quite early on in the book tells the beginner to not only play the simple three note exercise with their right hand, but to say the note names as they play as well. Incredibly simple, but also incredibly effective. While the book is easy enough to follow along with - provided YOU have the desire and drive to learn - I must say the best part about this release is the related free video lessons on the YouTube channel. As long as you have an internet connection, you have a digital piano teacher to assure you along the way. Other books may have more detailed writing, trying to explain how to position your fingers to play a certain scale, but actually seeing it done on your computer screen is a godsend.Overall, for the the price, and including the free video lessons, I believe this is one of the best beginner piano books out there. Now it is up to YOU to become the pianist you've always dreamt of.
If you want to learn proper theory and technique then this is the piano book to get. As a piano teacher, it is nice to come across a book that covers this from the beginning to advanced levels. This is important even for the casual player. It improves performance and minimizes the chance of a hand injury. You don't want to stress the hands. If you are trying to teach yourself, check out the accompanying youtube videos. The ebook is quite handy. Next time one of my students forget their books, I'll just pull this up on my phone! The instructions and pictures are easy to follow. I will be supplementing this to the current books I teach from. This book doesn't have songs in it. That's a good thing. Many songs in lesson books tend to be outdated. Not everyone likes that. Following this book, you'll be able to jam to your fav tunes in no time, and hopefully make up some of your own.
I am a pretty weak pianist when it comes to technique. This book provides all of the information I need to learn scales, arpeggios, chords, and harmony in every key and mode! I was really impressed with the amount of detail that goes into every section. The text is very clear and the print is easy to read. Fingering suggestions are offered throughout the book.As an educator, I would find very practical use of this book. For today's generation, YouTube videos supplement the course by providing a reference to work from. I believe that most students today can pick up a lot of info from video instructions, in addition to a book. Even I may utilize this book some day as teaching instruction, because it also teaches theory along the way, and I believe that the keyboard is a fast way to learn theory.I will be recommending this book to any educator looking to teach piano or theory students, but I also recommend it to those who want to learn the piano on their own.
Many piano technique books claim to start at a "beginning" level, but actually require some preexisting knowledge. That is not the case with Ferrante's publication. It truly begins not only at a beginning pianist level, but at a beginning musician level as well. It is perfect for any level of student who wishes to start learning the ropes of musicianship, theory, and performance. For people with a background in music, the layout is crystal clear, so skipping to the "lesson" number that applies to your own level is easy to do.The video lessons that correspond with the book are short and to the point. They are not distracting in anyway, and are a great tool for visual learners. I wish I had access to these videos while I was taking class piano! Having someone verbally and visually demonstrate techniques and ideas that I could have learned on my own time at my own pace would have been wonderful. Whether you're a first time musician or an undergraduate, these books can benefit you!
I've been playing piano for some time now but I was really impressed with what Piano Scales, Chords and Arpeggios had to offer. I looked through the book and found that some of my skills were wanting. Chose the Advanced level and began to learn Harmonic Minor Scales, Chords and Inversions. In fact, most of the intermediate level and all of the advanced level portions of this book were completely new to me. I cannot wait to get to the piano to learn these methods. The other great thing about this book is that it's so comprehensive. My partner wants to learn piano and there's no need for us to get a second book. We can share this one. He's already tried the first few lessons and are impressed with how clear and simple the instructions are. There are 30 streaming videos and is interactive enough to engage those with the most difficult of attention spans.I would recommend this book to anyone. It's clear, concise, engaging and will probably introduce you to new methods without you even realising.
