Great guide to the Chicago style blues from one of the best. Having played with the late great Muddy Waters, Bob learned from a legend. The accompanying video lessons are great and video quality is first-class both in content and production quality. Makes it very easy to follow ad pickup the riffs shown. I would have rated this 5 stars except the production quality of the print book is lacking. The first time I opened the book, the whole cover (not just the front) fell away. Very annoying for a new book and also very poor quality control from the production dept. After applying a fair amount of super glue, we're back in business. That being said, I highly recommend this book if you want to further your chops in this style of the blues.
There's lots of books on how to play hot licks, but not that many on how to play the part that most guitar players fall down on--the rhythm. Jimi was quoted once something like " There's a world of lead guitar players out there, but the most important thing is the rhythm". A bunch of good solid material here that we used to have to figure out from records & watching the old guys play. Hopefully this book will elevate the playing level at lots of blues jams at least!
I can't say enough about this dvd/ book. The stuff is the real deal, no poser rock stuff, just pure undiluted blues info that is so hard to get. This has the little touches that you need to take your playing to the holy land of authentic blues playing- old school. If you want to play real blues and can't find an old guru to school you right, get this. It just feels good! I can just sit and watch it and get my moneys' worth. By the way, I've been playing this music in bands since '78 and there was plenty for me to pick up as far as the finer points. Get if the love the real blues. It will make you a hipper player. This is not about a bunch of blues lead playing by the way. Get Bob's "muddy waters guitar" dvd for that or duke robbillard's "freddie king" dvd.
As a huge Blues fan and guitarist, this title jumped out at me. I saw Bob Margolin and band perform years ago and was aware that he played with Muddy Waters for awhile. He is the real deal. This book is full of great info and for me, has plenty of great lesson examples that are well explained in print along with the included DVD.
Master This And You'll be VERY competent in the Chicago blues rhythm guitar style. Very clearly presented and a tab book comes with the DVD. Wish they would have had reference material like this when I was coming up. :)
I have to say that I've been a fan of Bob's playing for a long time. His complilation of blues playing styles in this book and DVD are excellent . I would highly recommend it to any guitar player wanting to learn to play authentic blues. I got the kindle version for iPad but also got the book. The iPad kindle version includes the videos of the examples, and with some work they are easy to learn. The tips on capo use etc. are very helpful and the stories about playing in Muddy Waters band are very interesting. Thank you for putting this out.
This is a real treat--terrific and useable examples, and the videos are really good. There's something about watching Bob Margolin in his workshop play his old telecaster--very pleasant and very positive. Bob comes across as terrifically likeable, and you come away a better rhythm player, and have much more appreciation for Muddy, Bob, and that whole scene. Good luck to Bob, Dave Rubin and all involved--well done.
Great book...not for someone just starting out, but once you build up your hand strength and stretching ability, this book will be a great into to the Chicago blues style. Helpful and clear tracks on the CD
