I happen to quite like Sarah MacLean's writing style (if you haven't read her "Rules of Scoundrels" series, do so now - never has an author turned a gaming hell into an actual, lively character like MacLean did with The Angel). So naturally I was looking forward to the story of Lady Sophie Talbot, whom we met briefly in "Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover." I ordered the book without really knowing what it would be about - and now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.I didn't realize that with this new series (or at least, the series' debut) that MacLean was putting the Kardashians in a historical context. But, indeed, Sophie is the youngest daughter of a coal-mining father who won a title in a card game with King William IV and whose daughters' names all begin with S... and if MacLean had intended for each sister to have a memorable presence and personality, then unfortunately she failed. Seraphina was the oldest and the wife of the adulterous and just plain awful duke who Sophie pushes into a pond at the start of the story, and *her* I remember mainly because I felt so incredibly bad for her - more than any other character in the novel. She's pregnant and is cast out of her own home for Sophie's actions, and her husband refuses to acknowledge their child. This terrible situation of the "Exiled Duchess" is not solved by the novel's end, and this makes me really, really hope we meet Seraphina, Duchess of Haven later and see her in a better place, because she deserves none of her mistreatment. Then there's Sesily, who is a rather obvious stand-in for Kim Kardashian: a notoriously sexy woman whose suitor is an artist of obnoxious egotism... and I think we all know his intended real-life analogue...
