Oil Painting with the Masters, by Cindy Salaski, is a book ya just gotta have!It is well organized and provides a wealth of solid material. Ten of today's top artists share their insights on ten chapter topics, including: Brushwork, Mood & Atmosphere, Light & Form, Lost & Found Edges, Value, and more. There is a logical format that is common to all chapters, beginning with a brief story about each painter, including some personal tales and motivating experiences specific to that artist. Next is an illustrated essay of the chapter's topic, including a few paintings with explanatory captions. This is followed by a detailed demonstration painting, with about 10 steps, showing the full development of a painting.Marc Hanson is the artist in Chapter One ('On Mood & Atmosphere') , and it is a great beginning to the book. His work is imaginative and accessible. The demo is clearly described, step-by-step, so that the reader is exposed to Marc's thought process, as well as his technical choices. The essay includes concise information, and is written in a relaxed conversational manner. The chapter entitled 'Brushwork' features the art and ideas of Kevin Macpherson, and includes a description of the working properties of various brushes as well as showing Kevin's approach to creating a painting.The chapter essays provide a thorough examination of the painter's craft. Demonstrations and supporting images expand these discussions and incorporate personal bits of wisdom. Each demo includes a reference photo, even though several artists prefer to paint from life, nonetheless the photo shows the reader what the initial scene looked like -- at least it shows what the camera was able to capture.
