The Real Book - Volume III: Bass Clef Edition (Real Books (Hal Leonard))

(Fake Book). The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed without any copyrights or royalties paid to the master composers who created these musical canons. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You and your customers won't even notice the difference...the covers look the same, the engravings look the same, the songlist is nearly identical, and the price remains fair even on a musician's salary! But every conscientious musician and music store owner will appreciate that these books are now produced legally and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest music ever written! 400 songs, including: Ain't Misbehavin' * All or Nothing at All * Along Came Betty * Cheek to Cheek * East of the Sun (And West of the Moon) * Funkallero * H & H * I've Got the World on a String * I've Got You Under My Skin * The Jive Samba * The Lady Is a Tramp * Milestones * Moonlight in Vermont * A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square * On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever) * Samba De Orfeu * Stormy Weather (Keeps Rainin' All the Time) * Things Ain't What They Used to Be * The Very Thought of You * Violets for Your Furs * Watermelon Man * and more. Editions also available in C, B-flat, and E-flat. Looking for a particular song? Check out the Real Book Songfinder here.

Yeah, I should just get better at reading treble clef, but what are ya gonna do? =)I like having the melody for tunes in bass clef- it makes it easier to see where a melody player is in the form, especially if they are embellishing, ornamenting or going rubato- or finding them if they get lost. Having the melody on hand also helps give me ideas while soloing- themes to develop, etc. This volume also picks up some of the tunes left out in the Sher RBI sixth edition- which is nice! It's a good book to have at jam sessions.

Guess if you're an older Jazz Singer just learning to play Bass, you'll see many great titles in the table of contents , Bass Volume 3 :) Enough material to last experienced Jazzers a long time. Very novel experience, seeing it written neatly in the Bass Clef. What is a collection of Jazz without "Stormy Weather" ? (vol 3)The book has large clear print, careful arrangements. Thoughtful contribution to Jazz players.

I play bass in a jazz rehearsal band and we're working through a list called "The New York Ninety", which a gigging New York jazz musician put together. It represents all the tunes you just have to know if you want to gig seriously on the New York Jazz scene. Not one of the tunes on the New York Ninety appears in the Real Book Volume 3. Volumes 1 and 2 cover a ton of the New York ninety, with The Real Book Volume having the lion's share. A lot of the new York Ninety are found in the New Real Book series by Chuck Sher. There were some tunes I recognized in The Real Book Volume 3, like What a Wonderful World, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Norwegian Wood, Continuum (Pastorius), Teen Town, Watermelon Man, A Taste of Honey, Java Jive, Just a Gigolo, Just the Two of Us, and Harlem Nocturne. But not a compellling number of tunes that I found really useful for a band trying to break into the "just show and gig" jazz scene.I bought Volumes 1 and 2 of the Real Book and didn't feel at all disappointed, but with Volume 3; I wish I'd have spent the money on something else. It's almost as if Hal Leonard is trying to cash in on the popularity of The Real book brand to keep the series going with a Volume 3. I'd think REAL HARD before buying Volume 4, if one comes out eventually -- my guess is they'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel of jazz tunes to create a good Volume 4 -- and I'd have to see the list of songs before I put my money down for that one.So, the Real Book Volume 3 was a real disappointment for me. I'd rather someone put out a fake book of contemporary smooth jazz artists so bands can start playing some new music along with the old standards that have been played and played and played.....transcribing all that new stuff is just way too time consuming.

Book is great kindle not so much. Kindle doesn't play with blue tooth switch es. This is a huge problem for working musicians. Better to buy the paper and then scan in the pieces you need for performance. No apparent action will be taken by to fix in the near term.

Jazz players are expected to know the Real Book.As a bass player, while I read treble clef it's great to have it in bass clef.I actually bought it twice, a paper edition and I downloaded one in Kindle formy IPAD. In fact I downloaded several fake books to my IPAD.Now, should jazz be so dominated by the real book? That's another questionbut it is reality.
