It doesn't get more authentic Alaska than this! And how do I know? Born in 1975 in Dry Creek, Alaska, (Mile 1379 on the Alcan Highway, to be exact!), I had the privilege of being neighbors "just up the creek" from Bob (Robert) and his sweet and amazing wife, Betty Hilliker! Many a night I sat around their table, listening to Bob tell these stories! As I read the tales within this book, I could almost hear his booming voice and see the twinkle in his blue eyes! I can remember him laughing so hard, he would shed tears, while telling some of these stories! This book is just great! It's fun reading, and having grown up hearing most of these stories from the mouth of the author himself, I can't describe how thoroughly I enjoyed reading it! I remember telling him he needed to write a book, so that many more could enjoy his true tales and they would not be lost with time... So glad he did! I absolutely love the book, Bob!
The adventure Robert Hilliker shares is one of integrity and endurance. He shows that strength and boldness are a way of life when mixed with true determination. This is a motivating adventure that will take you to the edge of your seat. Through Robert's account of the happenings, you can feel the bitter cold and taste the freshness of the earth.
I really liked reading their adventure. The things they had to go thru to get a cabin built, cook meals and just every day living. I'm glad my husband and I didn't go up with the 59ers. Never could have done it. This tells the story.
This tale of building a life and cabin home in Alaska is rich with adventures, and is well written. The building of a house and out buildings using trees from their own land, the hunting and fishing, the gardening, the accidents that befell them, the trap lines, the snowmobile and boating incidents, the pioneering spirit and methods applied - are all exciting and very informative. Such bravery and determination reveal the heart of true gumption and grit. Bob even bought a small airplane and became a licensed pilot. These two are an amazing couple with an indomitable spirit. You can only admire them and this beautifully told story.
Really enjoyed this story. It brought back a lot of memories as our family also did something similar but in the susitna area. The author is very authentic and tells his story so that you feel you are right there with him.
Travel the trails of the deep north woods with THIS old "sour dough" and you may never want to come out of Sewards Ice Box. A rambling, entertainingly light hearted, strongly recommended read is what you have here. Looking for something with a tad more Alaskan solitude......try ONE MANS WILDERNESS by Sam Keith (also available via your trusty kindle).
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author and his family have had a wonderfully adventurous life and I very much enjoyed reading about it. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject. Thanks for sharing your stories Sir.J Brown
I don't know the author and I have never been to Alaska. I just bought this book because I needed something to read because I love the wilderness and it was inexpensive in Kindle format. It's a very good book. Definitely priceworthy! I am close to retirement age; I will definitely go to Alaska via the Alaska Highway in retirement now that I have read this book. I would never have considered it before. Our current truck is 20 years old and has 220k miles. I told my wife our retirement truck needs to be capable of Alaska. She said she definitely agreed. My only "critique" is that I needed the Farm explained earlier than it was. If it ever gets rearranged, the section that explains the farm needs to be moved to the front. Also maybe create a "Cast of Characters" section that serves as a brief reference for who everyone is. I enjoyed the book immensely as it is though.
