I hate to say I loved this book (because of the topic and what the authors lived through) but it was a fantastic read and a truly fascinating/terrifying look into the life of a sociopath, and his effect on all those he left in his wake. The authors captivatingly detail the journey of their growing up with a despicable stepfather whose crimes varied from vicious pranks, to cold blooded murder. I highly recommend this book - I could not put it down!
Loved this book and read it in two days because I couldn't put it down. This guy was a true sociopath in every sense of the word. The havoc he caused to two families is mind boggling and he had no sense of remorse. What was even more surprising is the number of women that fell for him. The Devil really did walk among these families.
Living With The Devil is an exceptional and compelling book written by two sisters who grew up with a sociopathic stepfather that lived a life so deceitful and incredulous that page after page captivated me and I couldn't put his book down until I was finished. As the book unfolds, each chapter more and more interesting, unbelievable and terrifying, I became enthralled with this family's resilience and strength. This memoir just scratches the surface of this man's evil nature and this family's tragedy. Hopefully, closure and healing will continue and as his trial starts may he face his demons. Well-written! Exceptional read! A 5-star recommendation!
I like true crime and do miss Anne Rule. That said, I bought this book based on reviews that said it was a page turner that could not be put down. I found that I had to put this book down every couple of chapters because I lived the life of this author. Unless you have lived with the devil (donnie) I think as a reader you may find this book simply a murder mystery, but it is more than that. It is about how psychopaths truly warp the minds of the victims they chose. The victims in this book were not simply the two murder victims, but the families and friends who find this type of personality in there lives, and then question, "how did I allow this dark entity in my space, but more importantly, how do I get him out? This book is about how pyschopaths portray themselves and their actions as innocuous, when in reality, everything a psychopath does and says is meant to cause harm to others. A psychopath does nothing but leave a mess of total destruction in their wake. This book should be read by any psych student who finds themselves interested in the topic of psychopaths and anyone who thinks they might be living with one. I see this book as a "wake up call" to victims or victims-to-be, to really take this book in, educate yourself, and learn what and how psychopaths operate and get yourself out while you are able bodied to do so, unlike the women in this book who died at the hands of this monster. I must make note, that many psychopaths, like donnie, get away with heinous crimes and come up smelling like a rose, while the victims lives are lost. Hopefully, one day, I will get to read a follow-up book as to "how donnie finally hung himself", as IMO, they (psychopaths) eventually do.
Lies, betrayals and homicides - this book has it all. Their story is shocking and fascinating. How a family could have been put through murder, deception, and decades of cover-up without the police making an arrest is mind-boggling. And the fact that this is all true made my skin crawl. It reminded me of Catch Me if You Can meets the Glass Castle. I couldn't put it down or stop talking about it. I hosted a book club with 21 people and everyone loved it and wanted to meet the author and find out more. Great read - I'd love to see it on the big screen!jo
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though it broke my heart to read of the malicious damage one person could do to people in his life. I truly don't understand the charm that kept others in such close and continuing touch with him, especially since they all seemed otherwise to be strong, aware and intelligent people. My heart goes out to them all.I would have liked to read at the end of the book whether the antagonist had ever been studied to find early life experiences that led to his behavior. His parents and first wife were mentioned but those family dynamics were not shared.I'm surprised that this is the first I've heard of this horror, as I've lived in the area during the time of the story. Makes you wonder who your neighbors really are.
This book is a well written memoir that seems so unbelievable that you would think it was fiction. The authors describe life as they knew it when their married mother fell in love with a man who they describe as a sociopath. He not only disrupted their idyllic suburban life with years of crazy antics, but is currently in jail awaiting trial for murder! If only we could get in the mind of this man - a psychiatrist's dream case! It will be interesting to see how his trial unfolds.
I also could not put it down and enjoyed the book. It is a great story. It is hard to imagine he was able to get away with so much and we can only hope he stays in jail for good. I know they love their mother and wanted to protect her, but she was also guilty of doing what she could to help him continue to victimize people, including her own children. At some point you have to do the right thing.
