I am a young teen who recently read this book and loved it! I read it over and over again as it never gets old. I also colored in the pictures. Although this book is pretty fun there is some not necessarily violent but some slightly mean humor. It has a slight bad message on account that the main character is a school drop-out and a rebel. He is always getting in trouble and detention. This book is pretty good but can never top the funny diary of a wimpy kid series. Even most diary of a wimpy kid books are more innocent then big Nate. Personally I don't think this book can cause any damage to young minds but note that I have seen books with much more intelligent humor with a better message.

I keep on the lookout for books to feed to my ten year old son, who I am attempting to instill a self-motivated drive for reading. I have witnessed him reading this book (and the other Big Nate books) on his own. He recently started reading aloud to me from Big Nate books as bedtime reading (it used to be just me reading to him). Anyway, the content seems funny enough for my preteen boy that he reads on his own, and that works for me.

This book, marketed for children, is appalling, at best. I bought it for my classroom, read it, and will now get rid of it because of the trashy, inappropriate messages it contains. Containing words such as "sexy" and ideas such as "girls like bad boys," etc. it should be geared towards adults. Young boys do not need to have these ideas reinforced, especially through a cartoon-type book that draws them in with a colorful cover and engaging illustrations. I would not recommend this book for anyone but adults.

My 8 year old has read and loved the Diary of a Whimpy Kid books and the Captain Underpants books. He was thrilled when I got him the Big Nate books. He's read them all and can't wait for the next one!

As a general rule, I pooh-pooh "graphic" novels. To me, that's a euphemism for comics (Archie, anyone?) and really, all kids should be reading LITERATURE!!! Enter in one of my twin boys. He's a "reluctant reader" who took to Nate. He begged me to read Nate. Months of procrastination later, I picked on up and was surprised to find that I thought the books were honestly funny and, so long as the parent discusses with the child the meaning of sarcasm, irony and sardonic wit (and how that's all great in a book but NOT GOOD in real life) then the books are not only harmless, but a solidly constructive step towards reading "real" books. I know, readers of my review will be appalled at my literary snobbery. What can I say. I am a wanna-be erudite. So, for "reluctant" readers, especially boys, this would be a relatively benign choice (v. Wimpy Kid which I don't like as much). For any other child, this is a reasonable addition as a funny alternative to literature. These would be good on a family vacation when everyone relaxes with a book in the afternoon. I would say target age is from 7-10ish. My boys are 8 and 10 and loved them.

This book, while fun and entertaining for kids, is completely inappropriate for elementary age kids. The book talks about Femm Fatality magazine Big Nate gets in the mail which he has to fight off his father and uncle for because it has has women fighters from hot planet where they have to "dress accordingly" and Nate likes to "gaze longingly at the magnificent art-work until every image is seared into my brain..." I was mortified that my son picked up this book from the classroom. Scholastic should pull this book off of their list.

My nine year old son, is a great reader, but gets bored easy with books. He loved this book and read it in one day. Good book if your kids like diary of a wimpy kid series as well.

I loved this book because it was pretty funny and didn't have a lot of repeats from other books.I would have gave it 5 stars but the price was a little high and a little inappropriate.Over all it is a good book.
