Caught in the crosshairs of a deadly standoff, Detective Michael Bennett must kill...or be killed. Snow blankets the avenues of Manhattan's exclusive Upper West Side. The storm is the perfect cover for a fashionable, highly trained team of lethal assassins as they prowl the streets, hunting their prey. But their first hit is simply target practice. Their next mission may very well turn the Cold War red-hot once again. Stepping directly into the line of fire, the president of the United States is in New York for a summit at the United Nations with his Russian counterpart. Pulled away from his family and pressed into service, Detective Michael Bennett must trace the source of a threat that could rip the country apart--and ignite a war the likes of which the world has never seen. With allegiances constantly in doubt and no one above suspicion, only Bennett can save the president--and the country--before the assassins' deadly kill shot hits its mark.

Torn between an honest 3-star review and real affection for the Bennett family, I caved to sentiment. Now all of the Bennett novels require a healthy chunk of "willing suspension of disbelief," but what ties the iffy plots to the real world are all the specifics -- the roads, highways, beach communities, summer cabins on lakes, subway lines. Both the plots and the authors' penchant for making Bennett walk on water need that concrete reality (to say nothing of 10 kids from NYC's ACS....)So what's my problem? Well, it's a book about a plot against the President of the US. It is set in November, starting with a snow storm and running through Thanksgiving. And yet this president has just been "newly inaugurated."No guys, that's in January. He's newly elected in November. And thus, not yet POTUS.I tried to dismiss this as a typo, as a failure of copy editing, as something too picky to worry about, but the plot -- such as it is -- depends upon the new-ness of the Prez, and it comes up again and again. The more I was made aware of the timeline error, the more I drifted away from those reality checks I so needed. As for the other elements of the book, there's still virtually no character development and very little time spent on the kids, even though a semi-plotline depends on one. The kids -- however unlikely -- are the best thing about the books, when the authors give them enough ink to notice. My favorite books are "Tick Tock" and "I, Michael Bennett," because they offer the most time with the family. (And "Tick Tock" even gestures toward a theme! Snort.)OK, so I'm an English major. It doesn't have an off switch. But hey, it's an election year! November is November and January is the next year. . .

As a further aid to readers of this review, I've added a link at the bottom to a shorter story (144 pages) featuring Michael Bennett.Quick OverviewThis is an action-packed novel featuring NYPD Detective Michael Bennett that I bought as much because of the character’s name (same as my best friend in high school in Southern California) as for it being an intriguing detective novel by an author I’m growing to appreciate more with each novel.Patterson is a prolific author who, teamed up with other writers, is producing a wide array of work. Some of the work is for children. Other works are for Young Adult and adults who prefer no profanities, but who enjoy action and adventure or mysteries. Bullseye is a novel clearly written for a slightly more hardcore audience looking for suspense coupled with political intrigue. Read on to learn what I liked and what I didn’t like in Bullseye…Incidentally, another Michael Bennett story, Chase, is available and is a very fast, fun, easy read, in case you'd rather start with a novell (144 page story). You can get a quick look at it here.Length: Print, 432 pages.Q - Target Audience/Genre and is it marketed as Nonfiction or Fiction:A – Fiction, Action-Adventure with emphasis on Suspense.Q - How was this book obtained?A – Bought on .Q – If this is fiction, is it a plot-driven or a character-driven story?A – Plot driven but with well-developed characters.Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?A – Yes. Still, an improved understanding of the primary character would result if you had read one or more of the other Michael Bennett stories.
