This is a great resource for anyone looking for baritone/bass selections. When I was looking for a book with good Broadway musical vocal selections I often ran into a myriad of books with bad arrangements; however, this book has provided me with a great number of pieces that I use for auditions or my vocal lessons. It includes great bass songs such as 'Ol' Man River' from "Showboat", and some other songs in the baritone range such as 'Johanna' from "Sweeney Todd" or 'Mack the Knife' from "Threepenny Opera". It features works by Sondheim, Rogers & Hammerstein, Hammerstein and Kern, Rogers and Hart, Loesser, etc. The best thing is that it includes the original arrangements for each of these songs with the original lyrics (all of the songs are the full-length versions). Another great feature is that it also has some really good scores from some lesser known but still good musicals. This book (together with Volume II and the duets book)is a must for any vocal student, singer,or just about anyone mildly interested in musicals.
Several of the songs were poorly printed into the score (ie: no where close to straight). I would imagine this means that there is a quality control issue at Hal Leonard, Co. However, as a performer and music instructor, this series are the most competitive in the business at getting the job done.
This book is essential for the serious baritone/bass singer who wants music right at his finger tips. My husband is in musical theater and vocal performance and he carries this on his person pretty much at all times.
These books are great. They give you the exact transcriptions of many hit songs from hit Broadway musicals. Some of the pieces might be overdone on auditions, but there are a lot of forgotten gems in here as well. Make sure to get a copy that has the piano accompaniment. It may be necessary for an audition!
It is everything that I expected. I love that the songs are in the original key.Some of my favorites are Try to Remember, Some Enchanted Evening, Impossible Dream, This Nearly Was Mine.
