I have a well thumbed copy of "Essential Music Theory for Electric Bass." When I started playing electric bass almost three years ago, I only had a basic knowledge of music. This book was very helpful in helping me learn the fretboard, cycle of fifths, the relationship between major and minor scales and chords, and intervals. It's exercises on shifting patterns was also very useful. It makes an excellent reference guide too. I'm learning to develop basslines using chord charts and refer to it often when I need to clarify the notes in a particular scale. Highly recommended. I hope the second edition expands on the information provided.
I'm a drummer, beginner bass player and somewhat experienced in music theory via paino lessons in college. This book is hands-down the best instructional book on electric bass I've seen - buy it and you won't be sorry!
As an intermediate bass player trying to learn the stucture of bass music, I have purchased many instructional books. And most of them spoke in a language that was either not clear or over my head. But this book nailed it! The explanations and diagrams were so clear and understandable that it immediately switched the light on in my head. So much so that I found the questions/exercises at the end of each chapter a breeze. Now I know what to and how to practice effectively. This may not be the most comprehensive music theory book on the market but it certainly is an excellent first step.BUY THIS BOOK!
A beginner, I did play clarinet in hs but I have limited knowledge about stringed instruments. With a few learn how to play basic books and no formal lessons I began jamming with a small group of guitar players who all loved to play with their instruments capoed. They often didn't know what key they were in, no capoe for the bass, I had to figure it out on my own and I found this book very helpful. It is not easy to understand initially but it is helpful if you keep working at understanding the concepts.
Taking bass lessons from a local pro. He loves this book and recommends it to new students. Teaches music scales, intervals, chord theory. This stuff sounds dry and boring, but the book makes you interact with it in a way that engages you. Packed full of important information if you're serious about learning more than just what notes to play.
I highly recommend learning about the circle of 5ths and how it relates to scales and modes. This will increase your music confidence and help you develop a wider array of bass lines. This book does a great job teaching that information.
This is my second purchase of this book....I had it when it had a white & orange cover 20 years ago. I am getting back into the bass and looked this book up immediately when I couldn't find my first copy.
