This is a great J.S. Bach book for the mandolin. It's written in the standard mandolin tuning of GDAE. If you're playing standard mandolin or octave mandolin you're probably already in GDAE tuning. If you're playing Irish bouzouki you're probably in GDAD and may want to tune the high D course up to E. It's a little easier to play melody (or lead) in GDAE, and it's a little easier to play chords in GDAD.Another reviewer said something about this not being mandolin music or a mandolin CD. You can look inside and see that this is indeed mandolin music and that the tabs are correct for GDAE. Also, you can go to Music Minus One and listen to excerpts from the CD (search on "bach mandolin"). This is an excellent recording and it's definitely a standard mandolin, although I personally think it would sound better using an octave mandolin (which is an octave lower than standard mandolin).
Writer that stated not mandolin music clearly mistaken. Standard treble clef music. May have met no tablature which isn't really mandolin music. Also, on recording each piece played 2 times. Once with mandolin plus other instruments and once without mandolin and only backup instruments such as an organ etc. I thought this particularly helpful in that you could hear it played with mandolin and then you can provide the mandolin track. Kinda like a karaoke recorder for mandolin rather than voice. He is correct that there is no solo mandolin playing on recorder. These pieces were arranged to be played along with other unstruments.
I decent way to learn classical bach for beginner mandolin. My only negative is that the Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is overly simplified and is missing a few bridge measures that are in the original piece. I am would assume there some of the other pieces are the same way. I also wish that each people had a 2 measure count before piece starts to play.
