The only book written about the Iraq War that goes into detail about the strategic level decisions that led to the tactical operations that placed these service members in some very difficult situations where they rose to the occasion with bravery and honor. The actions of the Soldiers and Marines mentioned in this book should make all Americans proud. This book is a must read so their sacrifices will never be forgot.

As a Marine veteran of the ground wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan I highly recommend this book for those seeking insight of the realities of the experience of the actual warfighter. It is an excellent oral history of the Iraq War from the viewpoint of the combatant. It is an important addition to the documentation of Iraq as it shares the view at the tip of the spear not the policy makers and high level leaders. The willingness of these warriors to share their stories with Mr. Bryant is an amazing example of trust and allows Americans who have never served or been in combat to perhaps understand the experiences of those whose reality are shaped by others ideals or politics. One of the more valuable aspects of the book is individuals sharing multiple accounts from different periods of the decade of combat in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), showing the evolution of the fight, the tactics and their perceptions of the situation. This is important as most Americans are completely removed from the experience of the military and even fewer have seen actual combat with only about 1% of the population choosing to serve and 49% of them being sons and daughters of military personnel, most Americans understanding of the Global War on Terror is based only upon the main stream media. These personal accounts share the humanity, courage and altruistic nature of the modern American warrior.

J. Pepper Bryars honors the Veterans of the war in Iraq by diligently capturing their perspectives of war from the Soldiers who fought the war. In this book Bryars depicts the raw emotions brought about in war, provides glimpses into the mindset of true warriors in times of battle, and shows the adaptability of Soldiers, over multiple deployments, who fought this war. This book is a must read in order to gain an understanding of the heroic efforts, critical decisions, and ultimate prices men and women paid for a politically unpopular event. As a Combat Veteran who served in Iraq during the height of 'The Surge', I encourage historians and all Americans to take the time to read this book in hopes it will provide more understanding and a deeper appreciation for the things this Nation asked our Service men and women to do.

These stories, as told by several who served heroically in Iraq, are inspiring, exciting and sometimes heartbreaking. This book was well put together and is educational about what the war was like for those who served. I highly recommend this book.

Every war has its politics. Every war has its heroic warriors. In an age when we are fixated on the politics of the Iraq War, American Warfighter focuses on the warriors. Pepper Bryars preserves part of America's war fighting history in an important way. American Warfighter should be required reading for anyone who wants to understand the grit of the battlefield from the ground as opposed to the non stop commentary from "experts" who never got their hands dirty in Iraq. Its a well written, fast paced read that revisits forgotten lessons from a major war in our own lifetime.
