This book is about as over-simplified as it gets. The pieces are characatures of traditional blues pieces. Each "solo" consists of one trip thru a 12 bar pattern essentially repeating a very basic "lick" or blues inflection, with absolutely no development. These pieces could not possibly be construed as performance solos or even authentic blues ideas. This book gives some basic riffs with thumb accompaniment but misses the real feel completely. They are soul-less oversimplifications.Books by Stephan Grossman or Steve James better fill the bill for the developing blues fingerstylist.
The pros - there are 2 songs that I enjoyed learning. The cons - (1) no fingering suggestions provided for left hand; (2) songs do not have names (just Track 1 thru 25); (3) songs seem cut short (only one 12 bar blues provided; (4) this is not a learning toolOverall, I do not recommend this book
Dave hits the mark here if you are a beginner to intermediate level fingerstyle blues player. No, these are NOT note for not transcriptions of historical blues pieces of original artists. It is not trying to be that. Those are quite difficult for newbies, and there are a lot of those books out there already. Instead, the gives the intermediate level player a bridge between total beginner material and advanced. A GOOD player can take this and expand it to whatever they want and an advanced player does not need this anyhow. I teach fingerstyle blues every day, and taken for what it is, this is GREAT material that fills a needed gap, much like the Larry McCabe stuff.
I think this is a really good book. It doesn't claim to be an instructional book on the subject. It contains 25 solo pieces. Key word would be pieces. Some are easier than others but there is a whole lot to learn if you are a beginner and even an intermediate player. It is a little short but still worth the money. IMO. Just had to express my opinion here because this is one of my favorite books on the subject.
Wonderful little blues gem shorts! It would be nice if he had some more developed pieces, but that might be another book.
