I am an experienced keyboard player, but I have never played a cornet. There is a comprehensive explanation of how to hold the cornet, form your embouchure, and blow through the instrument. There is also a chromatic scale and fingerings. I followed the fingerings up to F and back down. That was fun. There is a section that tells you how to maintain the instrument. Much more information is available...I've just given you the basics. This book is packed full of pieces that will help me learn to play the cornet. It will take me months if not a year for me to get through Book I. I intend to take my time. That's good because by the end of this book, I will be playing as fast as 16th notes. I look forward to completing these lessons and moving on to Book II. Have fun with this book. I know that I will.

This is one of the best beginning to intermediate instruction books for trumpet! I have been using it for many years. I have tried others with my students that are also good, but keep coming back to this one. The exercises progress in a logical manner for beginners, with appropriate length, and get a little longer as the student progresses. There are many familiar tunes that are used again to introduce cut time or theme and variations. The pace is quicker than band method books, but just right for private students.

Though book 2 of Walter Beeler's method contains more tunes that are fun to play (including numerous excerpts of trumpet standard rep), this book is solid. Lessons progress at a good pace, but they demand that the beginner be serious and start off with good habits.

I wish this book had more slurring exercises. Other than that, there aren't many methods that are as comprehensive for a young, beginning trumpet player. It touches on many aspects of playing trumpet, but doesn't dive too deeply into anything in particular. That can be left to Clark, Arbans, etc. when the student is more mature. There are plenty of opportunities to develop phrasing technique, as there are many nice little tunes throughout the book. If a student can get through this book by the time he/she gets to 9th grade, he/she should be one of the more accomplished players for that age group. If your student flies through the book before that age, Beeler did write a follow-up method (Book 2).

Although published quite some time ago, this method book for beginner-intermediate trumpet players is well put together and mixes up technical and musical exercises nicely in each lesson.
