If your are just learning cello with a teacher, or on your own, This is the book to buy. It teaches all the basic steps. For example, It shows where the fingers go, It will show you how to bow. If you do not know how to read music, this book will teach you bass clef, which is what you need to know to play cello. This book also has practice songs and will help your learn to play cello step by step. Just keep in mind that this is book one, to advance there are more advanced books as well. I highly recomend this book if you are trying to learn cello.
Pretty good book that covers fundamentals, covers correct positions on how to hold the cello and bow, note counting and covers all notes on all strings on the 1st position. The songs used are the boring Mary Had A Little Lamb and Can-Can. It's clearly meant to be used by teachers teaching an orchestra, it has a few places that say "while bass learns a new note, review ____" and a few conducting notes. A feature I love that helped me when I knew nothing was up to pg 13 it has the name of the note written inside the note.
I've been teaching with this book for the past two years and have mixed feelings about it- The introduction of reading bass clef and other concepts is good, but the songs that follow are quite dry. Students get very excited at the occasional recognizable song (Ode to Joy, Twinkle, etc.) but the rest tend to be extremely repetitive and don't hold their interest well at all. I will continue to shop around for a book that teaches beginner technique in a more enjoyable form... Let me know if you have any suggestions!
My granddaughter began playing some of the music immediately and found the book easy to follow and well-organized. It helped her advance her cello-playing.
