These solo suites so dominate the cello literature that I think many don't realize that there are other suites and sonatas for unaccompanied cello. They are awesome works, with subtleties which will tax the greatest virtuosi, yet they can be played for fun by students. This 1939 edition has some bowing and fingering directions, but no narrative about what the music means. The typography is clear, which is not easy in such complex music, but there are a couple of nasty inkblots.
This is my favorite edition of the Bach suites. The notation is clear and not too crowded (allowing enough space for your own pencil markings, bowings, fingerings etc). I also like the Schirmer yellow on the jacket. It's easy to pick out in a pile of music.
This book contains the author's interpretations of Bach's originals. While it is very readable and makes learning the songs a little less of a headache I don't agree with all of his musical interpretations.
The print is easy to read and the fingerings are basic. I have played this music for 40 years on Cello and Guitar. The Zen of playing Bach is exceptional.
Easy to read, and overall great edition. HOWEVER, there is an error in the gigue movement of the first suite, with some ties that shouldn't be there. I was playing it for a college audition and one of the professors asked to see my copy, and said "yeah, that's just not correct." I would recommend listening to a recording and playing what you hear, at least for that movement.
I bought this as well as Easy Classical solos for my son to help his keep his skill up while he takes a break from the instrument. this book features More difficult arrangements and he will probably need a teacher to master them. but very worth the price!
I really like this edition of the Bach Suites. Clear printing, nice binding; etc. I am really happy with it.
Great for someone like me who is a composer and not a cellist because of the accent marks, phrasing, etc. that are not included in the original manuscript. Great reference and good context overall.
