Lotería Jarocha assembles a series of linoleum-block prints created by Mexican-Canadian artist Alec Dempster after his return to his native Mexico in the mid-1990s. Discovering a lively genre of folk music from the Veracruz region, Dempster subsequently devoted himself to documenting his heritage with printmaking. The result is Lotería Jarocha, a collection of expressive images which catalogue Dempster's encounter with the vibrant son jarocho culture of his birthplace.

I first heard Alec Dempster on a local radio station talking about his long-time passion for the musical forms of Veracruz. I've never been much of a fan of Mexican music but after hearing his account of the musical styles of this region and then his performance of them I wanted more. Mr. Dempster is an artist/musician of Mexican/Canadian background (he was born in Mexico and lives in Canada). Each full page linoleum print illustration is accompanied with a description of the song it depicts with a brief history usually complete with anecdotes. The book has the light-hearted, rustic charm of the music it portrays. I only wish carried Dempster's CDs of the music.
Alec is a very talented artist and the prints in this book reflect that. It's a unique visual representation of the culture of Veracruz.
