Baron Bror Blixen was so noted for the admiration he excited in women, that his hunting clients were only half jokingly advised to write in their contracts that he refrain from seducing their wives. Best known for being the husband of Izaak Dinesen and also for being the inspiration for a Hemingway short story, he's well worth reading about on his own merits. The author is the Baron's godson and has an inside and affectionate perspective on his famous godfather.
My original knowledge of Baron Bror von Blixen came from Klaus Brandauer's portrayal in the film adaptation 'Out of Africa' and his own book 'African Hunter.' Sadly, the movie paints as a bit of a villain (albeit a likable one) and his book, while full of excellent observations on safari hunting, offers little insight into his life and mind.This biography, however, was obviously written with a great deal of care and research by his nephew Ulf and offers an enormous amount of detail on not only its subject, Bror Blixen, but the many men and women his life impacted and the rapidly changing East Africa he made a life in. He was certainly a womanizer as the title suggests, but every woman, presented in their own words, loved him and it's quite appropriate that the book is divided into chapters based on the woman he was involved with at that time in his life.Bror Blixen comes across as a flawed, but charming and unpretentious man. By the time your finished reading about his life, you'll only regret that you'll never have a chance to know him in person.
Sparse information by a poor writer. Bror Blixen led an interesting life and deserves better.
Of all the thrilling stories about great white hunter Bror Blixen I was sure this book would be great, it wasn't. Dull and boooooooooooring, it was written by a relative of Bror so I assumed it would be good. But the photographs were fantastic and rare.
