Taxes: For Small Businesses QuickStart Guide - Understanding Taxes For Your Sole Proprietorship, Startup, & LLC (Starting a Business QuickStart Guides Book 2)I was completely blindsided at how much I did not know. I am familiar with the basics of taxes and corporation entities. After that I was blown away about what I didn’t know or what I should have even been considering.Instead of being intimidated by it, this small book has a grasp on all concepts you never knew you needed. Payroll taxes, why choosing the correct entity is important, contractors versus employees, retirement and staying in compliance with the IRS are just some of the things you will learn. This is a definitely a go to book for the small business owner trying to get a handle on the 72 million little things you have to learn as you start your own business. There are tips and more included in this quick start guide as well as a quiz!!! Yes, there’s a quiz!!! . Although the book is not the entire tax code, one feels much better having a basic grasp on the situation when looking into the black hole of filing taxes. So don’t just file an extension to avoid the nuisance and inevitable, jump in and be prepared.I do complete my personal taxes myself for the same sentiment as the author states for completing your small business taxes yourself. First and foremost it is always important for you to know where you money is and where it is going. Staying abreast of all expenses is mandatory and keeping an accurate track will assist you when you go to files you taxes. As more and more non-business background persons start their own businesses this is the guide that should be in the repertoire. This was a great investment for my New business!! Thanks!!
We've been small business owners for six years, and I can attest, taxes can be the most daunting part. For the most part, this is a *great* book, that is really helpful. Taxes are not only stressful, they can be really dry. The writers of this book have done a pretty good job of breaking the content down to what you need to know, in a straightforward way, without making it too burdensome or just plain boring to read.A really nice touch is the quiz in the back. It brought a little fun (even!) into the entire topic by reading the scenario, and trying to figure out whether or not, or what might be deductible.I would love to give this book five stars, but I had to hold back one star for one simple reason. As comprehensive as this little book is, it ONLY covers income taxes, payroll taxes, and deductions. As a business owner, I can tell you that the most time I spent on taxes was on filing sales and other use taxes. Ironically, in the state in which we set up our corporation, we don't even sell anything upon which sales tax is collected, but it was explained to me that, so long as I sold retail, I needed to have the permit. It's important not only to have correct information, but also complete information. I realize that not all small businesses collect sales tax (we don't), but you need to know the situation for each state where you have a nexus AND your particular situation. Some states have service taxes, which I imagine are collected and filed in a similar manner to sales tax. Nothing mentioned in the book, and I wish it had been, even if there was just a reference to seek other resources.I received a copy of this book at no cost in exchange for an honest review. Any opinion expressed is mine alone.
This review is for the audio version (posted originally on audible):This is a quick start guide on taxes for small businesses. There are specific examples and advice that help clarify some of the deductions that are available to small businesses. I don’t think it is substantial enough to do your own taxes off of, but that is why it is a quickstart guide. It presents a nice gentle lead into the deductions and rules. Always consult a tax professional or get them to do your taxes every few years after doing your own; or when vastly different rules are introduced. The value in the book is that it should allow you to have a less confusing conversation with a tax professional as you will at least have had a primer and should be able to understand the gist of the conversation. It also reminds people that if you do your own taxes you need to keep upto date on relevant tax rules as they are always changing. Additionally, I would recommend this to someone starting out with their own business, as it is better to know ahead of time what kind of records and receipts to keep and organize them accordingly, rather than waiting until tax time to tackle a mountain of receipts. The narration was good. Everything was clear and well paced.Full Disclosure: I received this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review”
As someone who is self-employed, I thought that this book would help me to understand a little bit more about deductions that I could take on my taxes, and other tax tips. The book was a quick read (about an hour) and did provide a lot of information. I like that the book includes page numbers, and a table of contents. It makes finding what topic I want to read about very easy. I think that this book is a good reference for those that are self-employed, and I would recommend it.I received this product for free in exchange for sharing my honest and unbiased review. Opinion is entirely my own.
