First published in 1969 and out of print for more than twenty-five years, The Long-Legged House was Wendell Berry's first collection of essays, the inaugural work introducing many of the central issues that have occupied him over the course of his career. Three essays at the heart of this volume-“The Rise,” “The Long-Legged House,” and “A Native Hill” -are essays of homecoming and memoir, as the writer finds his home place, his native ground, his place on earth. As he later wrote, “What I stand for is what I stand on,” and here we see him beginning the acts of rediscovery and resettling.

Few writers and intellectuals chart a truly independent and original path. Wendell Berry has managed to do just that. It is amazing that he has managed to align his daily life with his politics, philosophy, theology and cosmology.By the way, he is a damn fine poet.
Originally written in 1969, this is my first Wendell Berry book but it sure won't be the last. Once in a while this learned man loses me but as I proceed usually in the next sentence or two I am rewarded by a thought so original that I have to sop and write it down, for example: "the right to be exceptional." Loved this book! And I especially love what Wendell Berry has to say about so many issues in our culture. Before reading his works I've seen him on interviews -- surely, An Original-thinking American!
This is a classic work. Very well written. Great sentiments throughout. Highly recommended.
