I use all of Rick Mooney's books with ALL my students and they are amazing. These books are the only way to ensure that beginning/intermediate students play double stops and thumb position every single day for the first few years of their studies. At the chance that Mr. Mooney happens to read this review, I would like to request a thumb book 3 and a double stops book 2 (ESPECIALLY double stops book 2)!
My 11 year old son with one year experience on the cello was able to gain 20 percent improved skills only 2 weeks after working through this pamphlet/book. I recommend for anyone with 'some' cello experience and who are struggling with reading music and finger placement.
There are 35 pages of songs (sometimes 2 short ones to a page) most all very recognizable to anyone over the age of 7, which makes learning easier since you know the timing, rhythm, and intonation. The songs are made less "grade school-ish" by use of the double stops, which are excellent practice for a beginner / early intermediate. Also, the fingerings are numbered above the notes whenever there is a new combination, throughout the book. Very helpful.
This is a great book for beginners to advanced students. It really helps the intonation, because it forces the student to fix off key notes that sound horrible when you play them as double stops. The songs progress from easy to hard.Overall, great product. The book itself holds up well.
Not real wordy, lots of practice pieces. Double stops are key for developing your ear and finger positioning. Mr Mooney did a fine job. Well worth having in your repertoire.
This is a good introduction to double stops. You move slowly into the harder double stops, and the student is not so frightened by them.
