Let me say that there is no new ground covered with this book, but it is a wonderful addition for Rockwell memorabilia collectors, as am I. The vast majority of the plates [pictures] in the book are in color. The colors rendered are bright and clear, and as always a delight to behold for those of us looking for Norman Rockwell's depiction of American life in a way that may not have ever really existed, yet we all wish did.Something especially nice about this 224pp book is that there are EIGHT full color plates that are removable for framing, while still leaving an exact copy of the same picture in the book. The pictures are arranged in grouping pertaining to particular patriotic themes. The book makes a nice gift for someone of a certain age and should offend no one. Again, let me stress, although the book has an abundance of written material all attributed to other various famous authors, poets, and songwriters, and etc. you should only consider this purchase for a chance to view the artists works in your own home if you can't travel to Stowbridge, MA to see the originals in person. It is simply nostalgia and desire for a way of life that we would all like to believe in.
This was a birthday present for my husband who loves Norman Rockwell. He loved it and the posters are a nice bonus. The kids stole it from him to spend hours poring over the book.
This is a great compilation of the best of Norman Rockwell and the true spirit of America - the best of who we were, in a simpler time. For me, this simpler time is so very heartwarming - in fact, my husband and I have recently retired to a place in America that feels like we've stepped back in time. So I guess, this great work of art bound in book form has inspired us to find the spirit of America through the talents of Norman Rockwell - one of our most favorite artists - and to live out our "Golden Years" in this 21st century, simpler, gentler, and with a spirit of the best of who we are as Americans, pictorally taken from the scenes of days gone by. "Spirit of America" is a keeper and has an honored spot in our book case. I highly recommend this great book!Norman Rockwell's Spirit of America
What an fantastic book. Not only are the stories wonderful and the pictures fantastic, but the pictures in the book are tabbed in so you can take them out and frame them and hang them on the wall. The best part is that the picture is still in the book too, a copy of it is underneath the picture you can take out and frame. So clever ! This book is great as a gift, for yourself to read, and a fantastic coffee table book for guests to pick up and enjoy when they come to your house. I highly recommend purchasing this book.
This is a very nice publication. It complements my library, and wonderful Rockwell paintings are accented by great snippets of American Literature. The ready-for-framing prints are a nice extra.For the price, this was a great purchase!
We have enjoyed the "Spirit of America" from the first picture to the last and the collection of songs, poems and stories is great. We are ordering 5 to give to our family next Christmas.
