I'll put it simply: after purchasing 3 different books on classical mandolin, including Marilynn Mair (too drill-focused) and Mel Bay (too basic), this got me right where I wanted to be, playing actual songs on the mandolin. It's especially wonderful when paired with Chris Thile's new Bach Sonatas and Partidas album, which follow the sheet music perfectly! Talk about an ideal companion CD! Don't get me wrong; this is more advanced stuff. But the music is haunting and engaging enough to keep you coming back to learn the next few bars, then the next...
It is the complete Sonatas and Partitas, its modern and good looking with clear musical notation. I do question the authors choice of chord fingerings as some ask you to stretch across 10 frets, which is ridiculous. Perhaps he was trying to maintain the voicing as faithfully as possible, but I have found much easier chords which, to my relatively amateur ears sound just as good.
It's all there in clear print. Fingerings are basic, I'll have to work out smoother positioning of the same notes in a different way. This book gives all I need to fully understand each piece. Spiral bound would be nice.
Good buy. Nice notation, fingerings could be better at places but they work well for the most part. Also if you want spiral bound take it to your local print shop/staples etc... and have them spiral bind it for under $5! Cheers
A must have if you are trying to learn J. S. Bach on the mandolin and cannot read musical notation. I wish there was an electronic version of this book.
Great, just what I needed. I wish it was spiral bound though, because it is hard to get it to lay flat.
