Although totally corny, this book is VERY funny! It's time for bed and the the little boy asks his dad why he always reads Mother Goose to him. His dad replies that it all started when he found a duck in the fridge! As a child, his dad found a duck and a mess one night when he opened the fridge. Upon returning with a towel he found three more ducks! It just got worse as the ducks appeared everywhere, even in his bed! What does one of the ducks say when the boy wants to know who is going to pay for all the food they want? "Just put it on my bill." (Get it?!)Calling 1-800-DUCK-B-GONE the boy was sent a kit to scare the ducks away. What was it? Sheep! Did it work? No! This is how the story continues with more and more animals joining in. How does it end and what does Mother Goose have to do with it? You'll have to read this great, well-illustrated story to find out!Written in a cartoon fashion, some of the speech is in speech bubbles. Formatted so that you read it in landscape mode there are two "pages" per Kindle page. Even though we only have a Paperwhite it was very readable. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
My 5 year-old pre-reader read this book to me while we were on a car trip last week. I love a book that has enough pictures and things small children understand that they are able to make a story from the pictures. When she read it to me, she explained that one Duck was in the refrigerator because he stole all the chocolate and he talks too much and all the other ducks were mad at him. The other little ducks went to play in the bathtub. Then the dogs and sheep and cows came over to play. Then she threw her head back and laughed. There are a lot of phrases that give the reader room for multiple funny voices to keep the children interested and involved. The pictures also help draw them in.I love the repetition. Repeating a phrase like, "Hi there" gives children a phrase they can recognize and even say out loud while they are reading the book. (The cows didn't say, "Hi there.") The one and only difficulty I had was with the complexity of the illustrations.
My 3 year old loved the illustrations, the story was just long enough to keep his attention. I know that the mother goose connection/part of the story went over his head, but he still was engaged. When we finished he started going around the play room saying, "there's a duck __insert location____". Then just led my husband in to the kitchen to show him the duck in the fridge. At 3-3.5 I think that says a lot about his engagement with a story. I have a feeling we will be rereading this one often. He kept running his hands over the pictures. He really loved the illustrations.
This is a cute story. I bought it to keep a friend's toddler entertained while we were shopping. She tried on clothes in the store while the little one and I sat on a bench and read the story on my iPad. Worked like a charm and the Mom had peace and quiet to pick out some outfits. The little boy loved the duck pictures the most and really liked the fact that ducks eat cheese (his favorite food).
Duck in the Fridge is a delightful story of why daddy reads Mother Goose to his little boy,! Storytelling dad and classic nursery rhymes create a new bed time must have for he latest generation. Inspiring parents to read children a bedtime story is great fun hor parent and child.
Reading books to my kids is fun, however sometimes get gets boring since most kids books are designed to entertain kids - and only kids. Having read another book full of sing song rhyming prose, I was ready for something good and funny to mix things up. Duck in the Fridge is a fantastically funny about the power of reading. Full of silly puns, great illustrations, and hilarious demands for pizza (and lots of it!) this book was both fun for my kids to hear and for me to read! The illustrations are bright and cheerful, the story is engaging, and the puns - while appropriately terrible - were hilarious for the kids to hear. This is a great "good night book" that I will be getting for all my friends when they too have kids!
DUCK IN THE FRIDGE – come on the title is awesome! *hee hee* This story is all out fun. Every time I turned the page (after I had calmed my giggling down), I’d giggle again! Mr. Mack has written a very funny, wacky book about a dad telling his son about a time when he was younger and had to get someone who didn’t want to fall asleep to fall asleep! His illustrations are cute and light-hearted. Ducks are just funny too! I like all of the little details in the pages. There’s no great message in the book, just a fun bedtime story and sometimes we just need one of those! The ending is really nice too.*NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
My granddaughter loves this books and the others in this series. The rhymes n the story are whimsical and sing-song sounding. She loves it. The illustrations are also really cute. She enjoys them all.
