Most of the books I own about songwriting are about writing lyrics. When I first picked up this book, my idea was still that I'd write lyrics and find somebody else who writes music. We'd help each other out and somehow a song would be born.Hah! Little did I know that it's possible for someone like me, with a good ear for words and rhythm, but no musical training since third grade, and no guitar playing since before Janis Joplin split from Big Brother, to actually begin to write not only lyrics, but also chords and melody.David Hodge's The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Art of Songwriting is a keeper, not only for me but also for friends who've been involved with the musical end of this art for years.P.S. Yes, I'm playing the guitar again. Yes, it helps with song writing. Yes, David Hodge has a book in the CIG series for that, too. Buy this book first and that one next, or the other way around. Doesn't matter. You'll be using both!

As a Nashville native, I've always been fascinated by music and the music industry. This is one of the few books I've found that offers a true insider's view of the real craft of songwriting. Topics covered include:accessing your creativitygetting your song publishedimproving the songs you havefinding new ideasunderstanding copyrightavoiding getting ripped offThe text is easy to read, and filled with helpful real-world examples. I highly recommend this book if you are serious about becoming a better songwriter.

I've been using the other two books in this series for a year and they've taken me successfully from beginner to novice. I found a breakthrough idea in this one the first time I sat down with it. Very glad I got it, but I still have a lot more to read.

Very practical but also, in a matter of fact way, very motivating. The solid guidance really empowers a reader who learn, improve and eventually excel at the craft of songwriting. Planning to read it again right away.

This book takes you through another method of writing songs. The author writes for a particular type of music, so be prepared to adapt if that's not your niche. As I recall, the focus is mostly on the lyrics, so be prepared to utilize additional resources if you need assistance in other areas.

You should look past the word 'idiot' in the title, since that doesn't do justice to the book's value. Having heard Casey Kelly play his songs, I knew this would be a good guide to songwriting. Also, having published music myself, I found the step by step attention to detail in lyrics and structure to be very helpful. The writers' approach is friendly and pleasant, i.e. they don't claim that it has to be done their way, but rather suggest a variety of approaches and techniques that are tried and true from their own experience. Their personal anecdotes about hit songs and well known musicians bring home the message of each lesson. I definitely recommend this book to any songwriter at any level of experience.

Being a songwriter and producer for several years in several genres of music I found this book great tool for anyone who wants to take the art of songwriting seriously.
