I would only recommend this book to someone just starting out with music production. It does provide a good intro to EQs. In the introduction Mr. Crompton establishes that many of the tips he will present were learned from browsing online forums. It follows that the value of this book comes from the fact that it serves as a reference with a lot of basic knowledge in one place, with very little depth. With 2 years of production experience I am by no means an expert, but I found nothing here I had not already learned by, you guessed it, browsing online forums. In this way Mr. Crompton has compiled a lot of widely available information without doing much independent thought or analysis, and this is where this book suffers. Advice is generally dispensed with no explanation of the underlying concepts; we are told that wide boosts and narrow cuts are preferable without any theoretical backing. The most egregious example of this is Mr. Crompton's statement that traditional EQs can shift the phase of a sound but that producers shouldn't worry about it. While this is generally true, phase shift becomes immensely important when layering synth sounds, for example, and by dismissing phase with no good explanation Mr. Crompton runs the risk of misinforming his readers. If you are within the first few months of your production journey, go ahead and get this book; it will prove a good starting point. However, use it as a basis for further research so you understand WHY EQS behave the way that they do.
