This may be the first Mary Higgins Clark novel and I think it's one of her best. The suspense is incredible and you'll turn the pages as fast as you can to follow the story of a mother desperate to find and bring home her two kidnapped children. In my opinion Ms. Clark's more recent books are not as gritty as her first efforts which are rich in atmosphere and edge-of-your-seat terror. If you haven't read Where Are the Children, you're in for a treat. If you read it once, read it again.
I think Mary Higgins Clark was at her best with this book; Where Are the Children. It was well written, and it kept me thinking constantly throughout the book. She made the story seem so realistic by letting the characters feelings and emotions relate to what other people in the same circumstances would have felt like. I really enjoyed reading this book. It was very descriptive about what was happening to the characters. Mary Higgins Clark makes reading enjoyable and relaxing. I did find the book a little hard to follow in the beginning, but the rest of the book made up for it. So, I decided to give Where Are the Children 5 stars. It was about a lady named Nancy Eldredge and her family. She was married to Carl Harmon and had two children, Peter and Lisa. She was very happy, and then one day her children disappeared. Her children were found dead and Nancy was framed for the murders. During the trial her husband and closest friend went against her. She decides to start a new life, and so she changed her appearance. She moved to Cape Cod and married Ray Eldredge, so that she could try to get rid of her horrible memories from the past. Nancy and Ray had two children named Mike and Missy, who were helping her move on with her life. Just when her life is going the way she wanted it to, Mike and Missy disappeared, leaving nothing but a little red mitten as a clue for the police to follow. Nancy couldn't remember much from the day her kids disappeared, so the police thought that it was her again. Will Nancy be committed for the crime again, or will it be someone else this time? The book has a very surprising ending. Read the book to answer all of the puzzling questions, and to find out what happens to Nancy and her family. In my opinion it's a book well worth reading.
This is the first book i read of mary higgins clark and it is one of my favorites. It is so suspensefull and an incredibly enjoyful read. I could not put it down if your reading this review you should so get this book! it is excellent.
This is one of Mary Higgins Clark's best books ever. The best part of this book was the suspense she keeps you in. Where she flips from different characters and different parts of the story makes and keeps the book interesting. The story of a mother who is charged of killing her first two children and seven years later has to relive it with her new family and kids. The mystery throughout the book is to know who's doing what and what is going on in different places, which is terrific. The different characters that were brought in made this story great. Clark describes everything so well; you can picture yourself there trying to solve the mystery with the characters.
This boook is called "Where are the Children" by Mary Higgins Clark. The publisher is "Dell Publishing CO. INC.". The price of this book is $7.99. "Where are the Children?" is a chilling mystery. It takes place on Cape Cod and the main character is Nancy, a stay at home mom. Many years ago Nancy was accused of murdering her two missing children. ONce she was set free from trial she moved and started a new family and had two more kids. When these children go missing the story takes you on a whinding twists and turns as police try to find the children and find the killer. Nancy goes through hard questioning which forces her to confess all of her darkest secrets. But the many people involved with the case only have little time because who knows who could have the children now. I loved this book because at times you thought you knew who had taken the children but then later you get completly thrown off track. This story kept me reading for hours at a time. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is looking for a good reading that hooks you on the first page and keeps you hanging until the very end.
"Where are the Children?" is the first book I've read by Mary Higgins Clark and I have to say that given Clark's fame in the mystery genre, I expected better. I found the book to be an enjoyable page-turner, but overall, it was only mediocre. Here were my biggest gripes:1) I accurately figured out who the killer was thirty pages into the book. The identity of the killer seemed so glaringly obvious, in fact, that I thought I HAD to be wrong and that some twist would surely come at the end (it didn't). Given the massive clues she clearly spells out early in the book, I find it hard to believe that most readers wouldn't know who the kidnapper was long before any of the characters know.2) The characterizations, as some other reviewers have pointed out, were weak, and I didn't find myself particularly sympathizing or identifying with any of them. I think the weak characterization was at least partially due to the overly omniscient narrator, who was inside the heads of just too many different characters to allow the reader to really get to know any of them well.3) The dialogue was often stilted, and all of the characters (even the children) seem to have the same "voice."4) Overall, "Where are the Children?" is a good read if you're looking for a good, fast-moving plot, but if it's unique writing style or literary flair that you seek, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. The book was, at times, quite suspenseful. As the reader, you don't know whether or not the children will get away from their kidnapper alive, and that kept the story interesting for me. I liked the book enough that I will try another of Clark's novels another time. Since this was her first novel, I'm hoping that maybe she gets better at giving clues and foreshadowing with more subtlety
