Got this for Christmas after requesting it -- I'm a church organist who plays pretty much strictly "by the book" rather than by ear, but I wanted to be able to play neat variations for hymns. This is pretty good in my opinion -- for most hymns, there is a very brief intro, then a fancier accompaniment for the final verse (some have a version to play for all verses; some have interludes also). For me, the biggest issue is keeping this book open (hard to do) and on the music stand along with the open hymnal too, so I can look back and forth from one to the other. Not easy! It would be nice if this were spiral-bound. Also, of course, the book is limited by the number of hymns it contains (about 35). Each Sunday when I get the list of hymns, I'll check this book and if we're singing some, I'll use it. I like volume 4 in this series much more (introductions to hymns and carols). As to difficulty level, it's not bad -- I'd say maybe a late intermediate level.
This seems like a popular choice, but there are definitely better hymn arrangements written out there. The arrangements don't include much of an intro or interlude (couple of pivot chords at most), and the re-harmonizations are uninspiring. I was able to modify and use some of the material, but for someone wanting ready-made arrangements this is not the choice. At least, for someone as picky as me about organ music, it just wasn't interesting or fun enough to play to be worth the money spent - just my personal preference in music!
