This book is not an instructional, but rather one that you can put in your collection for when you are in the mood to play hymns. In the front of the book there is a brief explanation of tabulature and tuning (traditional noter style, full finger style, and chords with vocal melody). There is also a one page refreshed on Ionian, Dorian, and Aeolian tuning. There are several black and white photographs interspersed throughout the book that give the music a little "mood." For each song the chords are separated and illustrated in the upper left hand corner. For example, in the song, "Shall We Gather At the River" the D, A7, and G are displayed and dots show the chord on the strings.This is perfect for the player who doesn't have a wide repertoire and is trying to pick out songs he or she can play. I'd say this is an excellent book for someone who is an intermediate player, but also an nice one for the beginner who wants to challenge themselves. This book has a very nice standard selection (words to the songs are included) that will satisfy the tastes of many. I know I dislike ordering a book out of the blue not knowing what I'm getting, so I'll type out the list of songs included in "The Dulcimer Hymn Book."
