Not enough scholars are looking at dance in any way other than chronologically or ethnographically. Foster looks at dance theoretically - as a form of meaning making, and she looks at the conventions and modalities that create that meaning. Her subject matter - the beginning of narrative in ballet - is limited and therefore lends itself to close research and review. But her process and the systematic way in which she conducts her research and writes her conclusions is exemplary and should be considered a template for future dance scholars.
A superb study of the origin and evolution of narrative ballet. Good use of illustrations from the periods. Highly recommended.
