FINGER RING LORE by Sir William Jones (1890) is an absolute must for any ring enthusiast. Jones covers not only the known history and findings regarding rings; he also covers much folklore and usage customs.Jones can explain all about the wedding ring as well as the pope's ring. The illustrations in this Victorian-era book are sumptuous. Naturally there are no photos. What's worse is Sir William doesn't really deliver as we might think he ought: he is short on actual ring history, but he goes on pages and pages about the betrothal ring given by Joseph to Mary. In other words, he's just long on lore and short on rings.One thing we must not hold against him in excess is his total lack of description of the rings and customs of his era. He says very little of his modern usages, styles and customs. While he has settled some basic arguments about the Claddagh ring, for example, there are older books from which Sir William essentially lifted the entire text.This book has the typical Victorian ring to it - either love it or hate it but I say read it at least once.My copy is an old clothbound, an excellent library piece and a fantastic in-depth source for anything ring-related.
