This is the first book on basic violin that I found to have a comfortable and logical flow to it. Great for the adult beginner. Everything is anticipated, easy enough, but not terminally "cutesy" as a lot of children's books are. Better to have it with a good instructor -- but with it and a good music theory work book you should make progress.
For a beginner this book is very useful and helps with all of the questions, that one has with learning a new instrument. As an adult trying to learn an instrument this book is one that doesn't talk down to you which helps one build confidence in learning the music.
I use this book for all my beginner violin students. Love that it progresses from just A and D strings and plucking with quarter notes and quarter rests, to adding more strings, bowing, and more rhythms. It has the note names written in for the first few weeks of lessons and then takes them out. Most students are okay with reading the notes by then. I don't like method books that start out with lots of rhythms in the very beginning.any edition of EE book 1 is fine, they are all 95% the same
This book will really help you out if you haven't even played a note on it before. Within a few months, it will probably be time to buy the second Essential Elements book.
My 10 year old just began lessons and the instructor chose this book. My daughter finds it fun and easy to progress. The book also holds her interest as she is "plucking" songs she recognizes.
I purchased this book instead of the Essential Elements 2000 series, but I quickly found out that the 2000 series just does a better job than this series. Would recommend the other series if possible. However, standing alone, this book does do a good job on teaching the methods for beginning players. I don't want to make it seem like a bad book.
I have the book and accompling CD. By itself the book and accompling CD are excellent. However, the CD does not have any counts before any selection which makes it difficult to corrodinate between getting your insturment ready to play and the beginning measure of any piece. Getting beyond that I rate this book excellent as well as the CD. but as a companion between the two, I rate the two as so so.
As the title says, my private violin professor has found this book best for starting off. She's been playing for over 30 years and teaching for 15 years. I've only seen about the first half of the book but it really does a good job introducing you to the violin, note by note then string by string. I would recommend this to anyone starting the violin, any age even.
