Because I almost always end up disappointed. Poorly written and crammed full of semi-believable tales of sex and debauchery. Name-dropping expedition to rival any wannabe scenesters. There. Is nothing even remotely redeeming about this girl's stories, the saddest part is, she wasn't anywhere near as hot as she thought she was, and was clearly being used while looking for a real relationship on a tour bus. Sad.
First, I loved this book and could not put it down. It's a fascinating tale of the 80's in a small town and all the 80's hair bands (mainly metal) that she saw and hooked up with. It's juicy and I respect her because she's wily. Never in the book did I get the impression she was untruthful and one of the highlights is that she includes TONS of photos, backstage passes and ticket stubs. It was such a time capsule to the 80's as well-I remember so many of the bands she saw and even saw some of the same tours. (Alas, I was a good girl so that's why you're reading my review, not my book). That said, the drawback to the book is that it badly needs an editor. It could have been so awesome if only she had the right editor-better than Pamela Des Barres I'm With the Band-with the right editor. As it is, I'm sure that there are people who will find it just unreadable because of the writing. Be warned-I'm not sure she ever went to college and her writing is not the highlight of the book. She overuses some phrases (new drinking game-drink every time she writes 'rock(s/ed) so hard')and even though it's years later shows very little reflection on her motivation for her actions. I longed to read 'In hindsight, I realize now.." but that just never happened. She skips around a lot, from show to show and shares very little of her personal life outside of her musical conquests. Which is funny because, in addition to assuming the band members only used her for drugs and sex, she's assuming that's all the reader wants of her tale as well. She's selling herself short-she has a great story to tell if she'd let more of herself come through.
Where do I begin. She goes to concerts. She looks hot (she tells us this herself). She rocks it out (according to her). She meets many heavy metal band members and sleeps with them. If she can't get the guy she wants in the band, she goes for choice number two and if that doesn't work out, she'll sleep with her third choice. She gets backstage by offering not only her body, but weed and cocaine as well. She stalks the bands from city to city and racks up her conquests like notches on a bedpost. Oh, I forgot to mention, she's so busy sleeping around she almost doesn't notice that her mother has breast cancer. I lived the 80's. I went to see the bands. Fortunately, in my case, I had enough self-respect not to give out free blow jobs or sex to get backstage. This was worse than trashy and I don't recommend it to anyone, even if it's free.
So I get the gist of what Rita is trying to portray. The sad part is it reads as if a small child wrote it. If you can overlook that then you can learn a lot of the dirty goings-on of a diehard groupie. I think it started off for the right reasons but turned into more of a game where she was keeping score. Heck no I'm not going to go by myself and wait outside a tour bus for the door to open. And am I the only one who thinks a lot of the rockers who took advantage of Rita's naive willingness were maybe pedophiles? Granted almost every rocker on the planet (especially then) was either drunk or high but good grief she was so young!
Pretty much I slept with this guy, and this guy, I was so hot that this one hit on me, and that too.. kinda sad and skanky, but it was free.
I love the 80's so I bought this book and Peggy Trentini's "Once Upon A Star" at the same time. I read Peggy's first, and this one second. Although this book had some interesting 80's rocker band stories, I like the way Peggy's was written much better. I started to write more on why I didn't like this book as well as the other, but didn't want to say negative things about the author or her lifestyle choices. I will say, I did go and read some of the other negative ratings and have to agree with most of them. On that note, I do hope Rita finally found love and happiness in her life. As glamorous as people may think sleeping their way through the rock stars sounds, this book proves it's probably not a good idea. Best to keep it a fantasy!
This is not much of a kiss and tell book, as would be expected. Not many details, mainly names of who she claims she bedded. More details of the men she bedded, and her close friends, would have made this book so much better. The author loves to call herself, and her clothing, HOT throughout the book. I guess she's stuck on herself and her sewing skills. She seems to be very proud of the amount of sex she gets from rock stars and how she used drugs to get backstage and to get their pants off. Not many women brag about sex and drugs. She does have alot of pictures, which does make it interesting. I find it odd that she looks like she is sneering in alot of the pics, though. I don't see her as HOT, either...not ugly, but not HOT (my opinion). The flow of the book is bad, too. The author will suddenly bring up another subject, for a sentence or two, then go back to the main subject, in the same paragraph. There are many better books, out there, about "groupies" that are much more interesting. Also, her web site is no longer up, so don't bother going there.
