Cherringham - A Cosy Crime Series Compilation (Cherringham 1 - 3)
Ebooks To Download

Jack's a retired ex-cop from New York, seeking the simple life in Cherringham. Sarah's a Web designer who's moved back to the village find herself. But their lives are anything but quiet as the two team up to solve Cherringham's criminal mysteries. This compilation contains episodes 1 - 3: MURDER ON THAMES, MYSTERY AT THE MANOR and MURDER BY MOONLIGHT. Here Jack and Sarah investigate a suicide in the River Thames - or was it murder? They investigate an "accidental" fire with deadly consequences, and they nab the culprit behind the Rotary Club choir poisoning. Cherringham is a series à la Charles Dickens, with a new mystery thriller released each month. Set in the sleepy English village of Cherringham, the detective series brings together an unlikely sleuthing duo: English web designer Sarah and American ex-cop Jack. Thrilling and deadly - but with a spot of tea - it's like Rosamunde Pilcher meets Inspector Barnaby. Each of the self-contained episodes is a quick listen for the morning commute, while waiting for the doctor, or when curling up with a hot cuppa. For fans of Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple series", Lilian Jackson Braun's "The Cat Who series", Caroline Graham's "Midsomer Murders", and the American TV series "Murder She Wrote", starring Angela Lansbury. Co-authors Neil Richards (based in the UK) and Matthew Costello (based in the US), have been writing together since the mid 90's, creating content and working on projects for the BBC, Disney Channel, Sony, ABC, Eidos, and Nintendo to name but a few. Their transatlantic collaboration has underpinned scores of TV drama scripts, computer games, radio shows, and - most recently - the successful crime fiction series Cherringham. The narrator of the audiobook, Neil Dudgeon, has been in many British television programmes including the roles of "DCI John Barnaby" in "Midsomer Murders" and "Jim Riley" in "The Life of Riley".

The issue for me and the reason for two stars goes beyond writing mechanics. The plot is simplistic, the characters underdeveloped, the conflict almost nonexistent. I got no sense of tension, no sense of danger, of something valuable at risk of being lost, no real connection between the characters beyond what the writers "tell" us. Everything is lovely to start with and stays that way to the end. The story is a classic example of telling rather than showing. I think that's what these two writers should work on since they have the basic story elements. Now, make them come alive.

This is a compilation of three books that came out as a serial. I will probably move on to the next compilation in this series. I'm all into the cozy mystery now and this series didn't disappoint. It is well written by two authors, one Brit and one American. The main characters, Jack and Sarah, are likable and work well in the story. The stories themselves are not all that complex and hard-boiled. It is more about the two sleuths determining that a crime has occurred and they pursue it until the culprit is cornered or gives themselves away. I like the setting in a small town. I like that Jack is an ex-pat and has a painful past. You know that he and Sarah will get romantic at some point but I do like that they don't even think about it in this book.

I am enjoying these shorter books very much and enjoy having them in this format. The two main characters are a bit different from the usual amateur detective couples, and the idea of a retired American police officer moving to an English village gives good depth to his character. The plots of the stories are very complex and handled well for such a short form. Looking forward to the next volumes.

"Does everyone love playing sleuth?"This is a question one of the protagonists asks, and I would have to say the answer is yes. Many people secretly feel they could solve a mystery given the chance. In this compilation, Sarah gets that chance we all dream of. With retired homicide detective Jack as her mentor, Sarah learns to navigate her way through investigations in her local village.I love a cozy British mystery and this did not fail to deliver. It was an easy read, but kept my attention throughout. Anyone who is looking for a feel good read should pick up this book. The friendship between Jack and Sarah evolves through the stories, and even though there is an age difference you get a feeling of "will they/won't they?" I am looking forward to seeing how things develop in later books. I would definitely recommend this book to lovers of British mysteries.
