Ellis retraces Sherman's march one conversation at a time. He interweaves Sherman's deconstruction of the Confederacy with Ellis's own childhood as a son of the South. The author frames these recollections through numerous very personal conversations with the many diverse people he encounters during his reunion of Sherman's path and his own past. While seemingly unambitious, the book is surprisingly memorable. One of the best travel books I've read.
I first read this at the library but wanted a copy to share with a relative. After recently being in many of the areas he wrote about I truly enjoyed the background of the people and their history.
