Law Of The Jungle: The Hunt For Colombian Guerrillas, American Hostages, And Buried Treasure
Ebooks To Download

Law of the Jungle by John Otis is a wild and riveting true story of kidnapping and drug trafficking in the jungles of South America. Written by a 20-year veteran reporter based in Colombia—the only reporter qualified to tell the tale—this incredible account of “The Hunt for Colombian Guerrillas, American Hostages, and Buried Treasure” tells the untold flip side of the story chronicled in the New York Times bestseller Out of Captivity. An amazing surreal-but-true adventure in the tradition of Mark Bowden’s Killing Pablo and Blackhawk Down, Law of the Jungle is, at once, heroic, tragic, and bizarre, placing the Colombian hostage story in its full and magnificently strange context.

Law of the Jungle is a great read- it really lays out the complex web of narco-politics in Colombia through the story of three "gringos" shot down over the jungle interwoven with the strange adventure of the Colombian Special forces team who were sent to find the Americans. The story would be difficult to believe if it were not true- and that is the common thread through out the novel.I have often wondered the back story of the whole war on drugs- especially as it has played out in Colombia, Law of the Jungle brought me up to speed in a thoughtful and entertaining way.The author's in depth knowledge of latin america, both culturally as well as politically show through in the narrative, Mr. Otis should continue writing on this subject, I can't wait for his next book!

For anyone interested in Colombia or just real-life human drama this book well worth your time. It is fast paced and jumps around a bit but kept me engrossed throughout. I was familiar with the story having read the book by the U.S. hostages but this more 'objective' view helped to understand the bigger picture. The 'buried treasure' reference on the front cover is almost distracting and almost dissuaded me from buying it. Yet that part of the story was perhaps the most interesting part of the book. To see these poor soldiers finding ways to blow the found money or try to hide it was both funny and sad. The Government prosecutions for that were terribly unfair it seemed. Anyway, the reason I gave this book 4 instead of 5 stars was the lack of a single map. There are so many geographical references that it seems almost unbelievable that one (or more) was not included.

As good as it gets on the full sight picture of that war and those times. As one who fought in the drug wars of Colombia in 96-97 as a contractorI found this book very well written. It captured the full spectrum of the storyfrom all sides, left to right and top to bottom and with a great scope and scale!A must read for anyone who wants to understand that conflict and those politics.

Very nicely done Jhon Otis takes you by your hand and walks you through what this American Heroes felt and lived through their crash landing and captivity I am proud to had been part of the effort to recover them.Well done Jhon thanksJorge "Coco" Sanjines

Two friends of mine who worked closely with John Otis in South America in the past told me about this book and I had also heard about it on a radio interview here in Houston.Otis brilliantly weaves the lives of three Americans held hostage in the jungles of Columbia against a backdrop of global politics, buried treasure and a harrowing rescue. The book narratively clarifies the conflict between the government of Columbia and the FARC. A real page-turner, this is a good book for a long plane ride or a bedside book good for pre-sleep adventures.

I was familiar with the overall story. But with incisive reporting, Otis brought the entire story alive and made me want to keep reading to the end. I knew how the story would come out, but Otis made me want to see how. I especially liked his details on the climactic hostage rescue.I read the book during a couple of flights. It's a good, quick read. The book has a good mix of background material that doesn't slow the overall story.

Good documentation and entertaining read on Colombia's narco guerrillas and the American hostages. Would also recommend "Out of Captivity" written by the three American hostages on their ordeal.
