I am currently the Assistant Principal & Utility horn with the San Diego Symphony. I have been a full-time professional horn player for nine years. This was the first book I used with my first teacher, 22 years ago. It's exactly the thing that a beginning horn student should use, and ALL of my students have been required to work from this book at some point. In fact, after taking time off for a vacation, this is usually in the pile of things that finds its way to my music stand on day one, to this day.This book is NOT a manual, not a how-to guide to be used without a teacher. But a good teacher will know exactly how to use this book to build the solid foundation that an advanced player will need. This comes before Kopprasch, Gallay, Kling, Cugnot, and Singer. For me, this comes even before the Farkas book. I believe talent is something you can build, and this is the first stone in the foundation.
I formerly played horn professionally and hold degrees in it from two conservatories. This is the method book I ALWAYS used with my beginning students. Most "method" books are printed for all band instruments and tend to focus on the trumpet and clarinet. Exercises for "going over the break" don't do much good for the horn player. This book, however, is geared exclusively for the horn and covers the areas that are most important. It also has duets and a few solos. I am pleased to see that, after all these years, it is still being published.
