Disappointing. An audio book is judged on two areas: the delivery and the substance. I gave this book 2 stars because the substance adheres to the description of the product, albeit with scant allusion to the mathematics behind the physics, but then, that level of rigor was not the intention of the product. The level of rigor does not go beyond that of a national TV anchorman talking of science, but then this book was intended for a non-initiated audience, and that is fine. Then, why not 4 stars? Because of the miserable and annoying delivery. For reason known only to themselves, the authors decided to pepper Newman's excellent delivery with accented quotes, that is, when a French, Italian, or German scientist was quoted, the quote was read by someone else trying to imitate what that French (Arago, Ampere), German (Einstein), or Italian (Galvani, Volta) scientist would have sounded speaking in English. No only was the accent exaggerated to the point of distraction and incomprehension, but even the words chosen and the sentence structures were substandard at best. Even quotes from English scientists were delivered by other than Newman, with the speaker trying to imitate either Faraday or Maxwell, necessitating a readjustment to the new diction. Let me add two more things to this already long evaluation. I speak English with an accent (I came to the USA at 20). There is no shame in that and I obviously sympathize with anyone trying to express himself in a language not his native one. But a science book or lecture has to be even, with a minimal of distraction, since it is hard enough for each listener (at least for me) to organize the substance heard in a manner that the brain can see the whole picture described.
