Kwanjangnim Original Haidong Gumdo is a unique book as it discussed a martial art that does not receive much coverage, Haidong Gumdo. However, this book is not the definitive guide to the martial art and is indeed a very basic book that could have been a magazine article. The actual English part of the book is about 60 pages in big type. I read the book in about half an hour, not because I could not put it down but because there was not much content.Most of the book's first pages are about how the author commenced Haidong Gumdo and achieved a black belt in what seemed a very quick time. I felt that this section was over done as it did not really contribute to an understanding of Gumdo. In a longer treatment of the martial art it would make a nice introduction but in this thin account it was overblown.I was very disappointed in that this book had no information about the Haidong Gumdo forms. It is not possible to learn a martial art from a book but I was interested in finding out what Haidong Gumdo looked like and that was really why I bought the book. If that is why you want to purchase this book then forget it; there was not a single mention of any Haidong Gumdo form or kata. No pictures, no written description.The history of Haidong Gumdo recieved a light treatment. Research sdeemed to be a search on the net, or more particularly the website of the World Haidong Gumdo Federation. The author claimed to be fluent in Korean but there did not appear to be a single Korean language source used for the book. A quick search on the internet, and in particular Wikipedia, showed that Haidong Gumdo has a controversial history. Its claim of an ancient lineage is widely disputed and the author did nothing to counter those criticisms.
