I'm self-learning the trumpet and I'm moving up to more complex topics with this book. I'm very well pleased with this book as I have several instructional books for various instruments, and this one is right up there with the best of them to be sure. And that's saying a lot considering the low price of this book and CD.The book presents various concepts as numbered "Ideas" which is a nice approach I think because it helps you to consider each new concept as an idea in its own right. From 1 to 4 pages are devoted to each idea. And many, but not all, ideas have CD tracks associated with them that give an example of the idea being presented.The book is divided into three sections:Section 1: Harmony - Ideas #1 thru #22 (there are about a dozen tracks associated with these Ideas)Section 2: Rhythm - Ideas #23 thru #30 (unfortunately there are only 2 CD tracks devoted to this section of 8 Rhythmic Ideas)Section 3: Melody - Ideas #31 thru #50 (like the first section there are about a dozen tracks associated with these Ideas)I think the book is very well laid out.The first section on Harmony covers major, minor, pentatonic scales and other modes such as Dorian and Mixolydian. It also covers ideas to do with various intervals and how these relate to chords.The second section on Rhythm covers tips on playing with a metronome, developing a swing feel, three against four, etc. However this section is lacking in terms of examples on the CD. This is a slight disappointment for me because these are important topics for me. Still, I can't deduct any stars for this because the Harmony and Melodic sections alone are worth the 5 stars.
