If you think Hula is just a dance Hawaiians teach to visitors you are mistaken. This book explains thecomplex history of the sacred dance, its development and importance within Hawaiian culture. It is beautifullyexplained and the pictures are lovely.
This is a beautiful book about the history and meaning of The Hula. If you love just browsing and learning, you will love it. If you need the index to cross-reference or look up a particular Kumu or event, forget it. The index does not relate to the book and is of no use to the reader.
I am a Hawaiian Studies major at University of Hawai'i. This semester I am taking Hula as a requirement for my degree. This book is a must read for anyone who has ever danced hula. I learned alot about staples in the Hawaiian community like Lokalia Montgomery, Maiki Aiu Lake, Mary Kawena Puku'i, 'Iolani Luahine, and many others to name a few.
I bought this book for the cover! No brainer. It's simply gorgeous. The chapters cover hula history, transitions, influences over time. There are also some really nice photos covering these different eras. A comprehensive timeline of this sacred art. Well done! This one is a real keeper.
Altho this is a reprint of the first edition, it doesn't have the most crucial pages that were in the first edition - namely charts of Kumu Hula pedigree and the small biographies of the notable Kumu Hula mentioned in the book. This is not mentioned in the write up. I have a first edition so i was able to compare page for page.:Below is the description for this 2nd edition:" The Hula was originally written by Jerry Hopkins in 1978, with assistance from Rebecca Kamili'ia Erikson, and it has been a significant narrative on the dance form ever since. Hopkins's book was the first to offer readers a comprehensive history of hula aimed at a general audience.Three decades later, The Hula has not been superseded. This reissue of The Hula has been updated and edited by Hawaiian music and hula expert Amy Ku'uleialoha Stillman and enhanced by poignant photographs and graphics, makes an overview of hula once again available to new generations of hula dancers, cultural enthusiasts and fans alike. This revised edition incorporates the same graphics as the original, but has been completely redesigned. 'I bought two of this second edition as gifts and not only was I disappointed but so were my recipients. The pedigree and bios were the hallmark of The Hula and a resource for many to ref to along with the illustrations of Hula implements and their nameswhich is alos missing.1 Star is for the informative Text re Hula. .
