I've had a beautiful ukulele gathering dust in my home for several years. I decided to try this book out before calling it quits on several unsuccessful attempts to myself. One week of this book has been far more encouraging and helpful than the months I spent online trying to teach myself! I highly recommend How to Play Ukulele: A Complete Guide for Absolute Beginners! The progress I've made through the teaching of this book, has reinvigorated my interest in the instrument.
I just purchased this book and am very happy with it! I am a TOTAL beginner and am encouraged to know that I may become a novice soon with the help of this book. All of the instructions are very easy to understand - I am not overwhelmed or discouraged, which can sometimes happen when trying to learn a new instrument. The book pulls off something that is difficult for beginner's manuals to do - the instructions are easy, AND the book is incredibly comprehensive. It covers almost all aspects of Ukele playing that you might want to know about, and delivers those aspects in a simple and encouraging manner. I highly recommend it.
Wasn't sure how this book would help an illiterate music person. But I have slowly figured it out. Practice will bring my talent along nicely and this book will guide me properly.
I like this book because I didn't know anything about the uke when I got it and it goes over all the notes thoroughly and eventually delves into fingerpicking, however if you come into it already knowing how to read music it's a little simplistic and goes over things you would already know, like how long to hold a whole note.All in all a pretty good book but I wish I'd known and bought a book that assumed I already knew how to read music.
Bought this for my brother as he had asked for a Uke for his birthday. He's spent the last few evenings strumming way and can now hold a pretty decent tune. I'm actually quite surprised how quicky he has picked things up. he is very pleased with this book, said it was easy to follow, not too daunting, and he liked the way it used Tab's as well as music as he can't yet read music but is now learning as he plays. Great price, great book for a beginner.

Easy to follow. However, there is no audio CD. Tones are extremely simple. This would be good as a children first book on playing the Ukulele. Also, there are no words for the songs. They could have included the words, but left them out. If you are a beginner, I would recommend Ukulele Primer with DVD by Bert Casey. Ben Parker has well organized this book and goes over finger picking. This is a good start before getting into the more complex patterns of finger picking. Ben is a kid with a lot of talent. However, he plays the guitar more then the Ukulele.
Great little guide for beginners. I had no idea about tabs and how easy it could be to play the ukulele! I have never played the guitar or any other stringed instrument, but this book helped me learn the basics, and actually play songs. I found chords to be hard, but for me picking (with tabs) came pretty easily. This was a great little guide!
