Mandolin For Seniors
Ebooks To Download

This is a beginning mandolin method. The contents of this book present the fundamentals of playing mandolin in a sequence making the material logical and easy to learn. The primary difference between this method and many others is that this book is written for seniors wanting to learn to play the mandolin. While many would say that getting on in years is only a state of mind, the fact is that some of the body parts (including the eyes) don't function quite the same as they did in younger years. With this in mind, the font has purposely been enlarged. Care has been taken to select repertoire familiar and appealing to a more mature audience and attention has been given to the pacing of the material. Accompanying CD includes all songs taught in the book.

Because I'm in the senior age range and was just starting with the mandolin, I thought that this book might be useful. It definitely isn't. First, the finger to fret designations on page 6 are contrary to every other mandolin study book I've seen, and the illustration of the mandolin neck on the following page is just lines, not a real illustration. It doesn't resemble the components of the neck and identifies the nut but doesn't describe where it is. And tuning using a piano assumes that the reader HAS a piano. For the eight strings on the mandolin, tuning the mandolin to itself is tedious; an electronic tuner is the only way to stay sane. And then the book launches into chords. A few pages beyond that, the practice pieces are shown in measured music with chords above, preceded by a description of time including cut time when there aren't any songs in the book in cut time. Having tried playing chords on the mandolin, I can testify that they can be difficult for older fingers. I play notes using tablature, which isn't mentioned or shown. I never learned how to read music and it's way too late to spend the time to learn. Although I didn't listen to the tracks on the CD, if they're anything like the practice tracks on other instrument training CDs, the timing is perfect and too fast for the beginner to keep up with. All in all, a very disappointing book and maybe that's partly due to it being adapted from a Mel Bay Guitar for Seniors book. The only thing this book has going for it is a larger type font.

I was disappointed with this book. It was too short for the price and was so basic as to be a Mandolin for Kids rather than Mandolin for Geezers. It's chord heavy in it's presentation, which is strange since seniors usually lose the strength in their fingers and a mandolin demands more strength to make chords than a guitar.
